19th March- Pride, Prejudice and Panchayat...
WOW, what a brilliant episode.. Power packed with brilliant performances...Extremely authentic.. And yes, excellently directed... I am absolutely speechless with the brilliance the entire panchayat scene has been handled... It was sheer genius... The last part and the preview had me tearing up...A man's pride and ego can lead him to his complete ruination.. It is upto Santu, the poor, young clueless girl to bring this enigma of a man back from the deep dark pit that he's dug for himself...
Starts off with Taruben's pride and her prejudice against Santu.. She goes on about how she's sacrificed her life for her brother and her kids, for the well being of their family.. But with santu's entry into her brother's life, everything has been ruined... I actually felt sorry for Taruben in this scene.. She in her own vindictive prejudiced sense of way is somewhat right... Hiten is angry, that without reason, without even knowing what his fault is he's being called in front of the panchayat... And its not a small thing, in a small village like Dharampur, the panchayat means justice, and pound of flesh for a pound of flesh... Virat is also puzzled and looks genuinley concerned and tells hiten that even they'll come to the panchayat.. Hiten gets angry and tells him that he wants to come only to nibhaofy his dushmani with his father.. Virat says no, that he's doing it for his bhanja... Business rivalry doesn't mean that they forget the relationship they share...
At dharampur, DM gets off his car, looking every inch the sarpanch and makes the slow painful walk to the head of the temple stairs.. The voices of his family members are resounding in his ears.. how baa bapuji says that they will never forgive him if anything happens to Hiten.. How the villagers were accusing their malik at his door step.. How madhav solanki accused his son... He sits on the chair at the top.. Hiten comes there, along with Virat and Subhadra.. Hiten stands in front of the panch.. Subhadra addresses the panch and asks DM what crime her son has commited for him to be summoned there.. And she adds saying whatever the crime maybe she knows that her son is innocent... DM addresses her as Smt Viraat Sanghvi and says that his innocence will be decided by the panch.. Virat speaks up saying that it is not right for them to start accusing an innocent person.. DM says that it is a village matter and internal matter and outsiders have no say in this.. Virat says that he's a relative of the accused and he has every right to speak.. DM starts the proceedings, he pulls out the bracelet and asks Hiten if he recognises it.. He then calls out monghi and asks her if she can identify hiten as the culprit.. Monghi says no, she cant as his face was completely covered.. DM asks her if she can recognise the car, and she says yes.. Hiten also says what monghi is telling is true..but...the villagers interrupt, thats all the villagers need, they start rushing toward hiten yelling lathi ke badle lathi, mauth ke badle mauth.. DM gets furious and asks his gaurds to control the crowd.. He then asks Monghi to recount what happened.. She does.. And when asked Hiten also says that what she's saying is true.. par.. DM doesn't let him continue.. He says that the truth has come out and nothing he can say will change it.. Hiten gives up trying to explain.. He looks at DM like this is what he expected from him all along.. DM gives hiten one last chance to clear his name.. Hiten remains silent.. The villagers start chanting sazaa sazaa.. DM is forced to make the toughest decision of his life.. He chokes up a little and says, just like how the cow was killed but strangulation with a rope, Hiten will also be killed, in front of the entire village.. DM tears up as he says this.. He ends by saying that next full moon day this punishment will be carried out... And ends the panchayat session..The villagers start shouting slogans praising malik... And DM turns around.. Hiten also turns and walks away... BOth hiten and DM's faces are a myriad of emotions, from shock to disbelief to helplessness it is all there... This scene was absolutely brilliant.. It left me completely speechless.. Poor Poor Hiten.. He's crucified by circumstantial evidence and he isn't allowed to clear his name.. When he does get an opportunity to, his pride gets the better of him and he choses to remain silent.. just to spite his father... Now I get why hiten is soo angry with DM all the time and rightfully so.. Hiten is DM's oldest son, but sadly, he doesn't get treated that way... He lost to the malik of dharampur who sadly is his own father.. The person who is supposed to be his greatest support is turining out to be the one crucifying him... DM this time has gone too far.. His pride, prejudice has truly led him down the well.. And he is going to suffer greatly because of this decision.. It was an extremely hard decision to take, but at the end he had to do it.. The malik of Dharampur was the one who was sentencing Hiten, but you could clearly see a fathers helplessness in his eyes.. As sukhi says, DM's eyes are the windows to his soul.. And today, his soul was out there, for everyone to see.. But the sad part was no one did.. They only heard what DM said.. Never saw what he went through..
The preview had me all choked up, you could literally see/feel DM's helplessness his desperation as he breaksdown.. I'm only hoping Santu manages to save the day.. She is the only one, who can pull DM away from the brink of self destruction.. All in all, an absolutely marvelous episode.. A must watch for a number of reasons.. Just brilliant work..
