Chapter 3

The Swaaghat

The palace of Jaisalmer was decorated marvelously to welcome of their sambandhiyon.

There was festivity every where in the kingdom. Everyone was happy about the upcoming marriage and union of the two kingdoms. All the citizens were gathered around the palace gates welcoming the arrival of their rishtedaron.

The princess in her anthahpura, never felt so out place. It was her last few days in Jaisalmer. After the marriage she would go to Udaipur with her husband. The uncertainty of her future was eating her from the inside. The pain was too much… too much to bear…

A few days ago, Anandi was summoned by her mother.. While going to her parents' chamber, Anandi heard two servants talking. She was never the type of person who would eavesdrop; but the words 'Udaipur' and 'Rajkumar' caught her attention.

"…. Haan Rukmi. Sach. Maine sunna hain ki Udaipur ke Rajkumar bahut gamad aur kaffa hain. Aur auratho ko izzath nahi dethe hain…"

"Kya?? Keh rahe ho tum Mani???" Rukmi her companion asks freaked out.

"Haan Rukmi. Mera behan Vani hain na voh Udaipur mahal main sevika hain. voh mujhe bathaya tha, jab voh pichle Jaisalmer aayi thi." Mani says in hushed whispers.

Rukmi takes in a sharp breath.

"Voh Rajkumar sachch-muchch bahot bura hain. Voh appne pitha ke bath hi nahi sunthe hain…" Mani continues.

"…." Rukmi was shocked listening to her.

"….Unke jaisse inta kator adhmi koi nahi ho saktha hain. Patha hain unhone ek sevak ko vadh kar diya kyunki unhone upne ekanth samay main pareshan kiya." Mani continues.

"kya…???" Rukmi asks shocke

"Haan. Aur aissa admi jab kal ve Raja bane hum aam logoon ka kya hoga???" Mani questions.

"Hey bagvan…itna karur… ??? voh manush hey ya koi rakshas??" Rukmi says with fear in her eyes.

"Haan… issi rakshas se hamare Anandi ke hath dene wale hain." Mani says sadly with tears filling her eyes.

"Abh… hamari Anandi ka kya hoga. Voh kitna massum hain… inti umaar main hi kitna jellna padega unhe." Rukmi says wiping her own tears.

"Hum toh kuch nahi kar sakhthe hain… Yeh unka bhagya main likha hoga.." She says wiping her tears too.

"Haan sach keh rahi hoo Mani… challo kam pure karthe hain, koi aajayega." Rukmi says and continues cleaning.

Outside Anandi who had been hearing the entire conversation was devastated. She felt as though a horse had ridden a chariot over her. She was just starting accepting the fact that she was going to get married away to some wealth Prince of the adjacent kingdom. But look at how her fate is playing with her. She is going to become a wife… correction a trophy wife to some pompous and arrogant prince.

Mani's words were ringing in her head… kaffa…. Laparvahi… aurathon ko baizzat… sevak ko vadh kiya tha… rakshas…kotor... kaffa…. Laparvahi… aurathon ko baizzat… sevak ko vadh kiya tha….. kaffa… kotor... Laparvahi… aurathon ko … rakshas….. baizzat… sevak ko vadh kiya tha… rakshas…..

"ugh" she sniffed and quickly wiped away her tears before antone noticed them. And went into her garden to find some solace.

Sitting on her favorite spot, near the pond… she felt the freedom to shed her tears. Later Ashima comes to console her.

Ever since she heard Rukmi's and Mani's conversation, she dreaded. She dreaded badly about her life after her bidai. The word 'shaddi' itself brought pangs of fear and rise goose-bumbs on her skin. Every night she dreamt of being carried away by a faceless man with an evil laugh. The fear she felt was nothing knew

Ashima tried her best to console her dear sister after she conveyed about the servant's conversation.

Ashima tried to brush it off saying that it was gossip; she should have not listened. And never contains good about anyone. But no she wasn't ready to understand. She believed that the servants of the palace only can get to see the true face of their masters.

The sambandhiyon arrived with there own procession. Like a grand parade. The men arrived on beautifully decorated horses while the women in dollies; carried by their servants.

They were welcomed by the whole city of Jaisalmer very grandly, showering flowers and band baja. Few young girls came forward with thalli's to take aarathi of the men.

Hearing the trumpets bellowing, all the sahelis of Anandi and Ashima gathered near the windows and the balconies of the palace to get a better view. Some were even showing flowers.

"Vah! Dekho kitne log aye hain!" a girl says, in awe looking at the procession.

"Dekho, dekho, Udiapur ka Rajkumar…" another says pointing at the Rajkumar elegantly ridding a white majestic horse.

Hearing this Anandi's eyes brim with tears. She silently hoped that they would find some fault and go away. How childish can she get? She scolds herself. She must put a brave front no matter what happens. She is doing this for the betterment of her kingdom.

"Hai… kitna sundar hain… voh!" a girl sighs dreamily.

"Haan!!" the other girls agree, giggling.

A few girls turned towards Anandi, who was sitting next to Ashima looking glum in her googhat.

"Arre Rajkumari apne Rajkumar ko dekhna nahi chahthe hoon kya??" a girl asks teasingly, while the rest start giggling.

Anandi quickly sits upright with a fake smile etched on her face. "Voh…"

"Are Kamini?? Kaissa dekh sakthi hain??" one of the girls asks.

"Kyun…??" Another girl asks confused.

"are?? Tumhe nahi patha?? Dulha dulhan shadi se pehla ek doosre ko dekhna ashubh manna jatha hain. Aur Rajmatha ne bhi is adhaat ko bhang nahi karma chahthi."

"Ahhhan… toh ye hui bath." The girls giggle.

"Issiliye Anandi kal se inti udaas hain...?" Kamini teased Anandi. All the other girls fall into another fit of giggles.

Anandi puts a faint smile on her face and looks at Ashima; who just squeezes her hands in comfort.

Outside the bharat were welcomed with great procession, with aarthis.. Dances… songs... Flower showers... And want not.

But not one of them knew the feelings of a broken heart present among them… Yearning to find solace in its lost love…. Consoling itself to just accept it… As Fate…
