PART 5: English Babu Desi Ma'am

"Anandi, tum Shiv se kabhi mili nahi ho na? Woh bahut khush hoga tumse milkar. Aur phir-", Jagya was saying to Anandi.

He was driving her to Shiv's office for her interview. He had told Shiv that he was bringing along a candidate today.

'Shiv will be very surprised to finally meet Anandi- the mind behind Jaitsar's progress!', thought Jagya.

"Main unse mil chuki hu, Jagya.", Anandi blushed. Just thinking of Shiv had her going red. She explained how Shiv had given her a lift yesterday.

"Oh! Yeh toh aur bhi achcha hua. Ab interview mein koi hichkichahat nahi hogi. Waise..", Jagya lifted an eyebrow. "Tumne yeh sab kal kyun nahi bataya?"

"Woh.. Um.. Main.. Mera dhyan nahi tha.", she mumbled.

"Achcha.", Jagya wasn't convinced. 'What's with all the blushing and mumbling?', he thought.

They reached the district office. Shiv's assistant Bheem Singh greeted Jagya warmly. It seemed that his relations with Shiv were very good. They were told to wait for 10 minutes. Just then Jagya got a call from the hospital. He needed to get there at the earliest.

"Tum yahaan manage kar logi na? Waise bhi, Shiv se toh pehle hi mil chuki ho tum.", he asked Anandi.

"Haan Jagya, tum hospital chalein jao. Main khud ghar aa jaungi.", she assured him.

He wished her good luck and left for the hospital. A few minutes later, she was called into Shiv's cabin. He was dressed in a white shirt and grey trousers, looking as handsome as ever.

"May I come in, Sir?", Anandi knocked at the door. Shiv recognized her voice and looked up in surprise.

"Anandi Ji, aap? Yes, please, come in..", he stood up. She looked even more pretty today, dressed in a pale pink salwar kameez.

"Ji, woh Jagya- I mean Jagdish ne aapse mere job interview ki baat ki thi..", she explained.

"Right, right.. Aap baithiye na."

As she took a seat, Shiv mentally told himself to stop fumbling. This was a professional thing, a responsibility. He exhaled and shifted into his 'Collector Mode'.

"Yeh meri CV hai aur mere certificates.. Aur Sarpanch-pad ka experience certificate.", Anandi handed a file to him.

"Toh aap summer job karna chahti hai?", he asked, while going through the file.

"Ji. Aur main aage jaakar Government Teacher ya Civil Servant banne ki chahat rakhti hu. Aur apne gaon ke liye bhi kaam karna chahti hu."

"Aapko kyu lagta hai ki aap iss job ke liye sahi candidate hai?", he took off his glasses and looked into her eyes.

"Um..", for a second, Anandi lost her train of thought. She shook her head and answered, "Main pehle bhi local government mein kaam kar chuki hu. Jaitsar ko aur yahaan ke logon ko bahut achche se jaanti hu. I'm an organized and efficient worker. Koi bhi kaam main bahut jaldi seekh jaati hu."

"Agar aap yeh job leti hai toh aapke hours kaafi hectic honge. Mere saath official trips par bhi jaana padega.", he informed her.

"Ji, isse mujhe koi pareshani nahi hai. Main yahi toh rehti hu. Aur waise bhi travelling ke liye mera Romeo hai na.", she smiled in reply.

'Who the hell is Romeo? Oh crap, does she have a boyfriend? Or is that some sort of nickname that she has for her ex, Jagdish?', Shiv wondered. 'Forget it. Its not like I can ask her. Well, there goes my plan for asking her out.'

"Anandi ji, aap iss job ke liye sahi rahengi. Bheem Singh kal se do mahine ki chhutti par jaa rahe hai. Agar aapko koi problem nahi hai toh aap aaj unse apna saara kaam samajh lijiye aur Monday se join kar lijiye.", he gave her file back. "Congratulations."

"Oh thank you so much! Main aapko bilkul disappoint nahi karungi!", she took the file and shook his retreating hand in excitement. When their hands touched and eyes met, there was an unending moment of attraction.. Only to be interrupted by Bheem Singh.

"Anandi madam, Dr Jagdish ne aapka scooter bhijwaya hai. Unhone kaha ki woh repair ho gaya hai toh aap uss par hi ghar jaa sakti hai.", said Bheem Singh.

Anandi and Shiv broke apart like they had completely forgotten where they were.

"Achcha hua ki Romeo aa gaya.", said Anandi to cover up the awkward pause.

"Ek minute.. Romeo aapke scooter ka naam hai?", asked a bewildered Shiv.

"Haan! Kyu aapne kya socha?", laughed Anandi. "Achcha, Sir, ab main chalti hu."

"Ji. Goodbye. Theek se jaiyega.", they both stood up. Shiv was thinking, 'Don't be a coward! Ask her out!'

"Anandi ji!", Shiv all but yelled. She stopped at the door. "Kal Saturday hai.. Meri chhuti hai.. Toh.. Um.. Kya aap mere saath lunch karengi?"

"Lunch? Aapke ghar par?", she asked. That was it for Shiv's courage. He changed his tack.

"Ji! Woh meri poori family Udaipur se aayi hui hai. They are dying to meet you. Unhone bahut kuch suna hai aapke baare mein.", he said.

"Oh! Aapki family ke saath..", did she sound disappointed? "Ji, main zarur aaungi. Bas ghar par puchkar main aapko batati hu."

"Ok sure.. Bye.", Shiv grinned, proud of himself. Well it was a date! Sort of. Kinda. Though not really. Well, it was better than nothing!

As Anandi smiled and left, he got a sense that maybe, just maybe, even she was hoping that it had turned out a little differently.

PART 6: Piya Ka Ghar Pyara Lage

"Dadisa..", Anandi paused while massaging Dadisa's feet. "Woh aapse kuch puchna tha.."

"Bol chori, ke baat hai?"

"Woh.. Shiv sir ne mujhe kal unke ghar khaane pe bulaya hai. Unke parivarwalen mujhse milne chahte hai.", said Anandi.

"Ke milna chave hai thare se?", grumbled Dadisa.

"Unhone bahut suna hai mere baare mein toh..", she mumbled.

"Oh! Mhari chidakli hai hi itni pyari!", Dadisa brightened at Anandi's praise. "Sirf thare ko nyota diya hai?"

"Ji."

"Theek hai. Chali jaa tu. Shib beta aur unke parivar ka maan toh rakhna chahiye humein.", Dadisa yawned. "Chal chori, bahut hui mhari seva. Ab so jaa tu.Aur sun, unn logon ko ravivar shaam ke khaane ka nyota deti aana."

"Ji, Dadisa."

Back in her room, Anandi called Shiv and informed him that she was definitely coming for lunch tomorrow. Though he hid his excitement in front of her, he couldn't resist jumping up and down after he kept the phone.

The next day-

"Mom, sab ready hai na?", Shiv asked for the umpteenth time.

"Haan beta, tu kyu itna pareshan ho raha hai?", asked Ira. She and Meenu were setting the table while Alok and Daddu were arranging the living room for Anandi's arrival.

"Bhaiya, aap toh aise pareshan ho rahe hai jaise aapki assistant nahi, koi minister humare ghar aa rahi ho!", laughed Sanchi.

"Arre Sanchi, minister hi toh aa rahi hai! Shiv bhaiya ke dil ki minister!", teased Mahi. He hid behind Ira as Shiv tried to hit him.

"Really, Shiv? Tum pasand karte ho use?", Meenu asked.

"Bhaiya, kya naam bataya aapne Bhabhi ka?", giggled Sanchi.

"Sanchi! Mahi! Please tum dono ye sab mazak unke saamne mat karna. Unhein achcha nahi lagega.", Shiv was stressed out.

"Lagta hai aa gayi humari mehmaan!", said Alok.

All eyes turned to the door. Dressed in a beautiful green silk churidar with ethnic red embroidery, Anandi stood smiling at the door.

"Namas-", but before Anandi could get the word out of her mouth, Sanchi ran forward and hugged her tight!

"Anandi! What a surprise!", Sanchi was overjoyed.

"Sanchi! Tum yahaan?", Anandi was shocked.

"Sanchi, pehle unhein andar toh aane do beta.", chastised Daddu. "Aao, Anandi beta, andar aao."

Stealing all of Shiv's limelight, Sanchi introduced Anandi to all her family members. She explained that Anandi lived in her hostel and she was the kind girl who had been helping Sanchi with her studies. Shiv mentally smacked his forehead and wished that he had paid more attention to his sister's chatter. But Mahi was as loyal as ever. After everyone had settled down, he turned the conversation in his brother's favour.

"Bhaiya, Anandi ji ko hi lift di thi na aapne parso? Kyu Bhab- Anandi ji?", Mahi asked.

"Ji. Inhone bahut madad ki meri.", she regaled the events of their first meeting.

"Arre wah, Anandi humesha meri help karti hai aur aaj mere bhaiya ne unki help kardi.", smiled Sanchi.

Everyone spoke nicely to Anandi and made her feel comfortable. They had a nice lunch with Sanchi and Mahi keeping the mood light. It did not escape anyone's notice that Shiv and Anandi couldn't seem to keep their eyes off each other.

"Anandi ji, aapko pata hai, Bhaiya aapke swagat ki taiyari mein kitne nervous ho rahe the?", grinned Mahi. "Aisa lag raha tha ki boss woh nahi, aap hai!"

Everyone laughed while Shiv and Anandi blushed. After a few more jokes and many more laughs, it was time for Anandi to go.

"Aap sab ko kal shaam haveli par dinner ke liye aana hoga.", she requested at the door. "Aap aayenge na, Sir?"

Shiv's family 'ooohed' at her blushing invitation.

"Shiv bhaiya ka lal-lal tamatar jaisa chehra hi sab kuch keh raha hai! Hum zarur aayenge.", assured Mahi.

With a shy smile, Anandi left with Shiv waving softly at her retreating figure. When he turned around, everyone started singing, 'Tumhein dekha toh ya jaana sanam.. Pyar hota hai deewana sanam..'

An embarrassed Shiv hurried into his room while his family burst into laughter.
