Anandi has just not changed the village with one bashan, they are learning everyday with their experience and learning more about the outside world that is what anandi is teaching the elders and girls in the village. They had many examples given by anandi like poolis and also the swamiji scene and I can't remember the name, but the girl who was a child widow married a doctor and also suguna.
This is how the social evil will disappear one day...Most of the parents wanted their girl's to be happy, but are scared of the society, even if one helping hand or words might change their mind

If cvs had shown 1 or 2 girls comming and putting mehndi
then it was believable but all the widows? Its too much.
Serpanch is not a very high post either.

@ bold - u didn't get the point here. It was not about a high or a low post. It's about their compatibility, love , admiration and understanding with Anandi. She does a lot for them...they do somethings for her...it's simple! Also, Anandi was not just friendly with one or two girls...she maintained her good relations with everyone in that village...all the elders, all the men, all the women, all the kids...and all the deprived too!

My dear, a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.

And I am sorry if this hurts you, but many of us who are in a position to do so, do not do a thing to stop a wrong, on the premise that we will not be effective.

Many of the bhashans are ineffective precisely because of the herd mentality. We are willing to go with the flow and not take a stand.

That said, a person who is revered/loved holds great sway over people's minds. I hope you remember the Anna phenomenon that recently swept over the country, regardless of the pro & con bhashans.

A person can only try. Whether it works or not is entirely up to the others.

It could also be that they are ready for a change but too hesitant to do so.May be that bhashan of Anandi triggered them to do something they already wanted to do.

So many times it happens in real life too.We may want to do something but were not able to do it because of our own inertia.Somebody may something that hits the right button inside our head and make us get up and do it.

Ela, true that societal changes take a lot of real world grassroots activism but reel depictions about a blatant wrong, even if shown with a quick resolution, at the very least bring the conversation into the mainstream conscious. In that it works out for me when BV pinpoints an issue and takes a stance on it. If you remember, Taare Zameen Par (that had a huge measurable impact) showed one pivotal conversation between Aamir Khan and Darsheel's father to make the latter aware about his son's dyslexia and that it was not a "deficiency". It's a fine balance between entertainment and social messaging in most media that aims to engross as well as teach.

My take is that Anandi is leading not only by talk but action as well that will cause some to emulate.

It was a nice move and emotional scene for sure.. I was thinking that in future Anandi should take further steps to better lives of such women..and try to better their daily life situations like make them wear normal clothes and not plain white/black clothes..motivate people to let them study, remarry, get dressed as they like!

I was deeply touched by Surekhaji's acting when she put mehendi on Anandi and then the two hugged, and again yesterday when she allowed mehendi on her palms, then the hug again, the tears in her eyes were so touching. Amazing actress.
