Victims of love By Mathures Paul The television industry draws a rosy picture of life ~ two people born to fall in love, their meeting, marriage... it's the usual talk about nothing. This doesn't make producers from making similar shows or television channels from airing them. After all, for whatever reason, TV channels dedicated to such shows are enjoying high TRPs. But when you meet the people playing the characters in these serials one gets the true picture of Mumbai's 'glam' world. Fame demands a price ~ for some it takes the form of loss of privacy and for some hard work, lots of money but very little time to enjoy life. Sitting across the table, talking to Neha Marda and Neil Bhatt about SaharaOne Television's forthcoming show Jo Ishq Ki Marzi Woh Rab Ki Marzi was a humbling experience as one could understood the challenges they are up against. The two established actors were in Kolkata ~ after a similar activity in Delhi ~ to promote their show and journalists came in large numbers. As a popular news channel analysed the recent attacks on Sri Lankan cricketers, here were two fine actors, dressed to take us back to the 1800s, speaking about a love story. For Bhatt entertainment industry always beckoned as he was born in Mumbai. Then again, he is from a family of lawyers and this makes him study the subject. Bhatt is required to study between shots and dedicate enough attention towards the SaharaOne Television show. As for Neha Marda, she is also famous for her role in Balika Vadhu. Luck has been kind (or hard!) enough to have made her sport a very "traditional" look. Dressed like a character out of a nineteenth century novel, she said, "I have become used to it. Most of the day this is how dress. In the last few shows my wardrobe hasn't changed much." Both looked happy even though a long day was before them. To make matters worse, they had to take early morning flights out of Kolkata to be on the sets once again, shooting 12 to 14 hours. Yet, they continued to smile and take on questions. In a nutshell Jo Ishq Ki Marzi Woh Rab Ki Marzi is the story of two Zamindaar families, whose patriarchs Uday Veer and Bhanupratap were once best friends. Their friendship was the stuff legends are made of and their children Sumer and Sunaina were well looked after. But the two patriarchs soon become enemies. Set in pre-British era, much of the serial has been shot outside sets. Sumer (essayed by Neil Bhatt) never questions his father's decision and is passionate about music. His flute mesmerises everyone. Sunaina (played by Neha Marda) is a livewire, full of energy. She is witty and adventurous. "The past always makes us sit up. It was full of romance or at least that's what we believe," said Bhatt. Whenever he finds time, he logs on to the net, and reads about the era he is living in on the sets. "That helps me understand the character." He also spends time understanding camera angles, technical details, etc as this helps him to perform better. The first few episodes is set in a gurukul where little Sumer studies. Then on, it's up to Neil Bhatt and Neha Marda to take over. Bhatt, by the way, is the winner of the once popular Boogie Woogie. He even auditioned for Prithviraj Chauhan but he looked too young to land the role. He is now in his fourth year of law studies and he hopes to get his licence a year later. As for Neha Marda, "I like my role as Sunaina is a fun-loving girl. This is a show about enjoying life." In the future she would like to work with film directors like Madhur Bhandarkar.
