Why do u guys only blame maasa for sugna's, gehn'a and anandi's child marriage? How about their parents.. I think their fault is greater.
Maasa is a very strong character. As a woman I admire her power. The whole village is humble in front of her, the way she shouted at the bull owner was awesome, she says she has grown her entire business on her own. She def goes overboard most of the times but I can't even imagine a person like Sumitra, Sugna in her place.. maybe Gehna or Anandi.
She is brought up in a different social background, she has seen how badi maasi was treated back when she tried to be modern. It is her sons who never tried to change her, she is gradually changing but some resistance is bound to follow. She feels bad but accepts when gehna revolted, when Basant stands by his wife, when bhairon stands by his family.. Badi maasi is bringing about changes that will take time for her to accept. her family is as much at fault as maasa is. Why is Sumitra so dumb? why did sugna oppose her own father when he didn't want her to stay in the outhouse? why did basant buy a wife? This is the next generation, blame them.. The person who tolerates oppression is as bad as the oppressor.
I just get awestruck at the command in maasa's voice, her stature and her power.

Some of you are full of praise for Daadi sa's character. I think Surekha Sikri is a brilliant actor, but there is nothing special about such a 'strong' woman character. India is full of such 'strong' women who reinforce the patriarchy. Daadi sa makes the whole family miserable. Doing nice things once in a while like buying shoes doesn't compensate for this. Yes, I agree she has had a hard life, but then everyone can have excuses for their behaviour!

I think that getting angry at phooli was wrong but stopping Niranjan from teaching Gehna was absolutely right.

very true! if anyone is a strong character then it is badi jiji who has changed with times instead of maasa who is stuck in the 18th century.
