Avika Gor aka Anandi, the child actress of Balika Vadhu, has created a sensation on Indian television. In an exclusive interview she tell us how Balika Vadhu happened and lots more...

How did you get a role in Balika Vadhu?
I have worked in a couple of movies and have also done a few serials before Balika Vadhu like Chalti Ka Naam Gadi, Karam Apna Apna, etc. The director noticed me in them and that's how it all happened.

Anandi is now a household name. How has your life changed after Balika Vadhu?
There is not much of difference but yes now people have started calling me Anandi, Futri, Nakchadhi Chuhiya, Beendri, etc... all my names from the serial. But I feel great because it gave me recognition and I am very happy.

Are you like Anandi in real life?
(Laughs) Yes, I am just like her. I also like to talk a lot like her. I also speak saachi-saachi like Anandi. I ask too many questions like her but the only difference is that she is married and I am not.

How challenging is it to play the role of Anandi?
As I told you that Avika and Anandi are very similar to each other, so it is very easy for me to play this role. I don't find it very challenging but playing the character of Anandi was a great experience.

Don't you think director and producer take more work from child actors?
No I don't think so. It depends upon the actor how he or she deals with it. I never felt that I am under some sort of pressure due to the makers of the serial.

How do you strike a balance between your shoots and studies?
I get my books along with me and mostly my shoots are after my school. Yes, sometimes I miss my classes but it happens rarely.

Was acting your childhood dream?
See, acting is my first choice but my childhood dream is to become Miss Universe and these are all the steps to reach my ultimate goal. I am very focused and so I have started working for it from my childhood itself. I am ready to take any challenge.

How was it working with actors like Anupam Kher and Sharmila Tagore in your upcoming movie?
It was a great opportunity for me to work with them as I got to learn many things from them Anupam Uncle gave me a few tips on dialogue delivery and expression.

A hit television show, recognition when she least expected it and a family that stands by her ' Smita seems to have it all. "When I first signed on to the project, we didn't even know the name of the channel where it would be aired. It was the powerful subject that convinced me to be a part of this show, I knew I'd be in good hands. Now, to be recognised after such a long break feels even more great," she says in delight.

After a self imposed five year break that Smita took to devote to her daughter, she thought this was the perfect time to return back under the arc lights to do what she loves doing best ' acting. "Most people think that I am like my character, Sumitra, in real life as well. But I'm just the opposite! I'm a talkative, fun-loving person who loves to party and travel. And it's amusing to see the incredulous looks on the faces of people when they see me dancing or wearing western clothes. People also tell me that they don't expect me to be so petite in real life," she laughs. "The only similarity between us happens to be that we both will go to any extent to keep the family together," says Smita who also happens to be a trained classical dancer, something that not many people are aware about.

And what does she do when she isn't being admonished by her on-screen mum-in-law, Surekha Sikri? "Oh, I shoot for about 15 to 20 days a month and the rest of the time goes in spending time with my family. I enjoy being away from the sets as much as I like being on them. And Surekhaji is the most amazing human being I've ever met," she says.
