It is hard to find a person in society today that has not been touched by cancer in some way, either directly or indirectly. World Cancer Day hopes to honor those who are fighting and those who have been lost to this dreadful disease. Take a moment and sit with me while I tell you about this unique day of remembrance and determination. I promise you'll understand the day more and be ready to take your part in helping others so that perhaps one day there will be some in society that are not touched by cancer.

History of World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day is a fairly new holiday to bring light to this ages old disease. At the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris, this day was formally organized by what is called the Paris Charter. The charter was created with many goals. The Paris charter aimed at promoting research for a prevention and cure for cancer. Also, the charter hopes to bring awareness and change to the services provided to patients. They knew that increased awareness and information would help to mobilize the global community to help combat cancer. In the spirit of this charter, World Cancer Day was created.

With the advent of World Cancer Day, it was hoped that it would keep the Paris Charter in the hearts and minds of people everywhere. The goals and ideas of the Charter will never be lost as long as there is even just one person to celebrate the day.

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds"
-Motto on James Farley Post Office

We know these intrepid adventurers, and adventurers they are. They travel through every form of weather to bring us our mail, regardless of the temperature, or dangerous dogs in the front yard. They are the friend of every child around Christmas, or their birthdays, and even today there's nothing quite like waiting for that Amazon delivery to come through the post. Thank A Letter Carrier Day reminds us to show our appreciation for these wonderful men and women, and the joy they bring us each day through the post.

History of Thank A Letter Carrier Day

The history of Thank A Letter Carrier Day is as old as the history of the post, and that may very well be longer than you think. The concept of mail was first recorded in Persia, or at the very least the first concept of an actual codified postal system was. King Cyrus the Great went to great lengths to ensure that mail could reach the corners of his Kingdom, and worked with neighboring countries to make sure that the mail got through and the system reached as far as it could. This process involved building roads and getting guards and massive diplomatic negotiations, but it lasted for a long time. The quote on James Farley Post Office is actually a rephrasing of a quote by Herodotus of Greece in the 5th Century BC.

"It is said that as many days as there are in the whole journey, so many are the men and horses that stand along the road, each horse and man at the interval of a day's journey; and these are stayed neither by snow nor rain nor heat nor darkness from accomplishing their appointed course with all speed It doesn't take much to identify the heart of that creed in the above statement. Thank A Letter Carrier Day reminds you to show your appreciation for someone continuing an idea that's existed since before Christ.

How to celebrate Thank A Letter Carrier Day

The best way is simply to meet them at the mailbox and offer them a hearty thank you. If you know what their preferences are you can offer them a cold drink or a hot cup of tea, or just some snacks to take with them on the road. Remember, they're the men who bring you good news and bad, but let's not think about that last part, no reason to shoot the messenger.

Do you remember that feeling of a cozy welcome when you went to the library as a child? The excitement of finding some new adventure around the next stack of books? The feeling of success when you finally understood the Dewey Decimal System? Or was it the smell of the print on the pages of the books that kept you coming back? These memories are something that not many children are being introduced to since almost everything is on the internet. On Take Your Child to The Library Day it's the perfect opportunity to make sure your child can close their eyes and conjure these memories as well.

History of Take Your Child to The Library Day

Nadine Lipman and Caitlin Augusta are co-chairpersons of the Take Your Child to The Library Day intuitive. Nadine created the idea to make a fun way to bring community awareness to the library and all the resources and events that are held there throughout the year. The first day was celebrated in 2011 and has grown to include libraries all over the country.

When you head to this site you will be able to learn about ways to celebrate the day, and why it is important to bring the community back to the library. For years now libraries have faced funding issues and have had to get creative in their fundraising. This is the perfect chance to host events that can elevate the local library in the community's mind. Some have even gone as far as celebrating a week instead of just a day!
