Mere Dad Ki Maruti Review: A genuinely comic film

Kolkata, March 15, 2013 (Washington Bangla Radio): Mere Dad Ki Maruti, the latest production from Y Films, is a fun ride for the audience. The title of the film carries the name of the popular Indian car manufacturing company Maruti which is very popular among the general people. In the course of the film Tej Khullar (Ram Kapoor) comments that a Maruti car is "value for money".
The film revolves around a Punjabi family gearing up for a wedding. The head of the family Tej Khullar (Ram Kapoor) plans to gift a red Maruti Ertiga on the occasion of his daughter's marriage. Things take a turn when his son Sameer (Saqib Saleem) plans to take the car out to meet Jasleen (Rhea Chakraborty). Rhea is introduced as "Chandigarh ki hot Shakira" and Sameer's friend Gattu (Prabal Punjabi) feels that she will create trouble in Sameer's life. Gattu's prediction comes true as the new Maruti Ertiga goes missing while he goes for an outing with Jasleen.

Sameer understands he will be verbally assaulted by his father due to this irresponsible action. He plans to keep his mouth shut and tries to find ways to get a similar car for his sister's marriage which is just three days away.

What follows is complete mayhem. The climax of the film is even funnier with Sameer's success being a bit too much.

Ashima Chibber has to be praised for the simple story which has been narrated in such a great manner. She succeeds in a grand manner in her first attempt at storytelling. She is the co-screenwriter and she maintains a strong hold over the proceedings in the film. This makes the film well constructed and there is not a single scene which looks out of place.

The comedy in the film is genuinely rib tickling and not like slapstick that the audience has been watching in some of the recent Bollywood films.

Dialogues by Ishita Moitra work perfectly for the film. The dialogues do not resort to any Santa-Banta jokes for tickling your ribs. They have the right combination of wit and smartness to make you laugh. Sample dialogues of the film include "kaun Sameer - Puri, Khanna ya Randhawa?" and "my hips might but my lips don't lie".

The acting performances are another strong pillar that makes the film so enjoyable for the audience. Ram Kapoor as Tej Khullar plays the role of the fat, loud Punjabi father with gusto. The actor who is immensely popular on television finally appears in a feature film in which he can demonstrate his acting credentials. And be assured you will not be disappointed. He plays the role with such attitude that you will forget that he is Ram Kapoor.

Rhea Chakraborty as Jasleen does not have much to do. She adds glamour quotient to the film and she carries that part well. Saqib Saleem as the reckless son does a great job in this role.He matches Ram Kapoor in many of the scenes very well. Prabal Punjabi as Gattu is apt in his role and plays it with conviction.

Whether you fancy having a Maruti Ertiga or not, you can take a ride on it in this movie for a unique experience of a laughter session.
