He has had his share of films apart from being a huge star on television. With Yash Raj Films' presentation, Y Films' "Mere Dad Ki Maruti" releasing Mar. 15, Ram Kapoor has become a title-role player — he is the 'Dad.' He has a bad cough the day we meet at YRF Studios, but the actor is in a genial mood nevertheless.
Excerpts from an interview:
Q: What does the film mean to you?
A: Well, I hope it leads to me being established in films in really good roles. "Mere Dad…" is an over-the-top comedy and family entertainer. The company has freely mentioned the car brand Maruti, as a Maruti car is at the base of the story. My son in the film robs my car. That made the story relatable as I had banged my father's Fiat as well as Contessa! And yes, my first car was a Maruti 800 too!
Q: Would you rather continue with films or television?
A: I am an actor and open to any good role — in films, television or theater. I decided to become an actor, not a film actor or any particular type of actor. I firmly believe that any good performance is noticed, like my first film "Monsoon Wedding" 12 years ago, "Udaan" or my serial "Kasamh Se…" and others. I don't plan too far ahead and prefer to concentrate on what I am doing now. But as an actor, I am not satisfied and have a long way to go. At the same time I love my work so much that nothing seems difficult.
As for Indian television, let me tell you that this is just the beginning of boom time for it. In another decade or so, it will be as big as American television. And the gap between it and cinema will decrease as it has in the United States. When I joined TV, the budgets and fees were nothing compared to what they are today.
Q: What else are you doing in 2013 apart from your hit TV show "Bade Acche Lagte Hain?"
A: I have five films coming up this year, including "Mere Dad…"
Q: How did it all begin?
A: I was in Sherwood College, Nainital, when I did a play for Founder's Day. I was so smitten by the three months of rehearsals, the fun we had and the great feedback that I was bitten by the acting bug. I went to the U.S. to learn acting, and sold cars, coffee, credit cards and pizza to make money. Today, I work hard and party harder. My turning point was "Kasamh Se…," and I became big from that point.
Q: How do you balance work and home?
A: My wife tells me, "This is your time!" and supports my taking up a lot of work. But thrice a year, for 15 days, I take off with my wife and kids for some exotic destination. I have a crazy time with them.
Q: You had a kissing sequence in "Bade Acche…"
A: Yes, and it was very aesthetically done. It is a mature show and if I was 40, which I am on the show, I would do it that way. As an actor, it is my job to do my best.
