Why is the press and media still obssessed about 12th March episode? Move on people. We have lots more happening ever since..
EK sure knows that TRPs are just a guide. What she wants she makes and sells it.. If its nice and appealing to us(either individually or collectively) we lap it up..Thats all.

Bade Achhe Lagte Hain's controversial episode did not see any spike.

MUMBAI: In an attempt to boost ratings of one of its top-rated shows, Sony Entertainment Television (Set) aired the 'most talked about' love-making scene on Indian television on 12 March. However, the ratings of Bade Achhe Lagte Hain's controversial episode did not see any spike.

This was the first time on Indian television that a serial's sequence was taken to the level where the lead couple was shown kissing each other. The show did garner a 3.5 TVR, but this is the average rating that it usually manages. The love-making scene didn't really make any difference.

Meanwhile, though retaining its No 2 position, SET lost 13 GRPs (gross rating points) in the week ended 17 March. As per TAM data (C&S, 4+, HSM), the channel clocked 218 GRPs during the week.

The Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) genre leader, Star Plus, continues to top the charts. The channel attracted more eyeballs and added 24 GRPs to its last week's tally. It ended the week with 287 GRPs (last week 263).

Star Plus aired Ra.One twice on Sunday 11 March at 1 pm and 6 pm which fetched 2.7 and 1.7 TVR respectively.

The battle between Colors and Zee TV continues and, once again, the later toppled the Viacom18 channel. Zee TV grabbed the No 3 position with the addition of 5 GRPs. The channel from Zee Entertainment Enterprises bouquet registered 217 GRPs (last week 212).

Colors slipped back to No. 4. The channel lost one GRP to end the week with 214 points. The Apsara Producers Guild Awards that the channel aired on 11 March recorded 1.4 TVR at 2 pm telecast and 2.4 TVR at 9 pm telecast.

Sab too lost eyeballs and ended the week with 129 GRPs (last week 136).

Next on the ladder is Star Network's second GEC Life OK with 84 GRPs (83 GRPs in the prior week) while Imagine TV clocked 63 GRPs (adding one GRP).

Aided by cricketing action, DD1 saw a rise in ratings in the C&S homes too. The national broadcaster added 27 GRPs as Asia Cup commenced on 11 March. The channel recorded 58 GRPs for the week ended 17 March.

Meanwhile, Star's repeat channel, Star Utsav, garnered more eyeballs than Sahara One. Star Utsav closed the week with 47 GRPs while Sahara One ended with 43 GRPs in its kitty.

Despite an almost 20-minute love making sequence between Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar, the show has failed to make it into the top 10 programmes for the week ended March 17.

If Ekta Kapoor's decision to introduce a little touch of the 'Dirty Picture' sensuality on Sony's Bade Achche Lagte Hai was to generate fresh audiences for the show, the move has surely bombed, and how!

The consistent 'sensuous' promos of the March 12 episode on Sony (for approximately a week or more) led to an almost universal anticipation that the 'move' would crown Bade Achche Lagte Hai (BALH) as the No. 1 property in the Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) space for the given week.

However, quite contrary to given expectations, the revelation through the weekly GRP rating system showcases a tale with an absolute twist. Despite an almost 20-minute love making sequence between Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar (unmistakably a rating push up move), the show has failed to make it to the top 10 programmes for the week ended March 17.

According to TAM, the episode has scored 3.54 TVR, standing at the 11th spot with an average TVR of 3.23 for the given week - suggesting that the protagonists' 'moves' on the show could not push up its TRPs, after all.

In fact, an episodic review of the show suggests that despite the build-up, the show's viewership has remained constant.

Consider this: The TVR for the episode on March 5 (the previous Monday) was 3.3 and the TVR for the following Thursday (March 15) post the love making episode was 2.88. In fact, it's the Thursday episode on March 8 (the episode prior to the one on March 12) that has scored the highest (3.65 TVR).Also, the following episodes in the given week have witnessed a slight dip in ratings. The TVRs of the episodes on March 13, 14 and 15 stand at 3.47, 3.04 and 2.88, respectively.

So, why did such an anticipated hype fail to translate into viewership?

Media experts note that BALH enjoys a significant audience loyalty in the urban markets. And, as the numbers suggest, the show continued to retain its core eyeballs even for the March 12 episode.

According to Ravishankar N, media partner, Media Planning Associates, the channel failed to gather fresh audiences despite the hype chiefly because the communication was limited to the channel itself.

"It's an opportunity lost to garner fresh eyeballs. If the promo scheduling could have also looked at barter deals with other channels such as UTV Bindass or MTV (viewers who could be targeted with such content), surely it would have generated extra ratings," he avers.

Also, the slight dip in the rating over the previous episode could also suggest that a few viewers may have chosen to not watch it to avoid embarrassment.

"The show is primarily urban-centric. But, there is an impact of the Tier II and Tier III markets, too, on Hindi GEC programming. And, the slight dip may propose the fact that families viewing the show in such markets (if any), chose not to watch it," says a top media executive on conditions of anonymity.

But should such content be telecast on a GEC during primetime?

According to Praveen Tripathi, chief executive officer, Magic9 Media & Consumer Knowledge, the channel programming versus the day-part programming have their own specific constituents and one should not break that component.

"Family primetime viewing has a certain kind of audience and such viewers do not expect spicing up of the genre to such an extent. There has to be a difference between what you hint at and what you can show during primetime so as to avoid embarrassment," he says.
