@jas- You have to understand that there was a landslide and rocks and debris were flying. In a situation like that how can he lay the baby down. One of the flying rocks might hit the baby. He has all the right to worry about the baby and most importantly Bharti would not allow him to do that. I think she was almost there and it was her ripped slippers that gave in when she tried to place her foot firmly. He was as helpless as anyone could have been in that situation.
I agree w/ kt25, but I also think Murli bit off more than he could chew by trying to rescue Bharti while having kid @ hand. Instead, he could have put baby on the ground under him, while pulling up Bharti. Later, he could have been more co-operative w/ the rescue team and kept his baby, instead of giving him to Roopa. It would be one thing if he knew Roopa, like a friend from Agra, but he doesn't. So if he doesn't find her, what does he do next?
Bharti's slippers weren't the problem - she could have let go of them in that condition, and gone barefoot. Problem was that it's not easy to pull a woman - even a midget - w/ just one hand - you need both. But one of Murli's arms is left holding the baby, plus they both had wet hands, which may or may not have made it more slippery.
I agree that in the panic of that moment, one doesn't think straight, and so ends up pushing the panic button which only makes bad situations worse. I do hope the leap doesn't involve Murli being separated from Rehan as well.
