Shakuntala is a character. If Yamini has to get her part right, she has to start thinking along the lines of the character. It was very clear in the scene where Nikumbh asked her what she would do if a beloved person in her life left her forever, and she replied saying that she wouldn't probably do anything because "kar hi sakte hai?" That is NOT like Shakuntala, and Yamini has to grasp that in order to portray it effectively on stage. Yamini is new to theater, so it obviously isn't easy for her to just slip into the skin of any character. That is why all this effort.

Plus, Yamini herself told Nikumbh that deep down, she wants to be like Shakuntala. Nikumbh can see that fire in her. It isn't about changing her. It is about bringing out what is ALREADY there. Of course, at some level there is a personal intrigue. But the play has not, and can never take a back seat for Nikumbh.

That being said, they did go a little over the top with the trust dialogues. The trust in this case is w.r.t. how far Yamini has come in Nikumbh's eyes. This is the same woman that Nikumbh was convinced was so "star-struck" that she was incapable of anything heartfelt. Now she has convinced him that she won't leave this half-baked, that she will do everything to get her part right, and with the kind of sincerity and heart that Nikumbh had not deemed her capable of. The trust is w.r.t. this. But going so far as to say that "he trusts her more than himself" is going too far, and it seems sort of baseless. That I agree.
