^^ I didnt read anything sense i haven't watched Goong.. but Maryam di, does that mean you FINISHED it.. and DIDN'T LIKE it??? ๐ ๐ ๐ You're the first person I've heard that from! ๐
Yes, HP addict! I am disappointed ๐ญ Probably I had really high expectations from it and ...hmmm... First, it was a drag in the last 10 episodes. IMO a story which could be folded in 15-17 episodes dragged big time Second, they went a bit overboard with that Royal stuff like the Great Queen wearing that horrible wig each time, being all those rules and stuff .... I mean ok, it IS Royals way but even they are changing in 21st century. It got extremely boring after a while. There wasn't any attraction left in the "Royal Rituals" in the last 10 episodes.
The best part was the relationship of CG's family, CG and Shin, CG and Yul's moments, CG's free spirit [when she was depressed, I felt as drama lost the charm], Granny's cuteness๐ณ....
[quote=Tiki]Ah let me emphasize my view one more time... just because i want to..
shin was NOT a cold man[/quote]
Wiki-dictionary: Cold: aloof, distant, unfriendly, unwelcoming
I guess he was all that initially [Yes he changed after episode 23 but that was for the end..]. He was big time aloof and proud. He was unfriendly [because he didn't like CG..one of the reasons] He was distant. ๐ I wish I could turn him into a frog๐๐
hmmm...since i have a habit of writing thesis on every character ..let me start with most controversial one...prince shin.
In my opinion he is the most sensitive, selfless, responsible and mature character I have come across. Here is a kid who is brought up in a very loved and simple family until one nice day , his uncle dies in an accident and he ends up becoming the crown prince. he losses everything in one shot...his father tries hard to measure upto his brother in his guilt(it has been hinted that king felt responsible for his brother's death becoz of the affair)...his simple and insecure mother turns strict and harsh in trying to please her husband. To top it all off everyone assumes that he should be thankfull and pleased since he is sitting in the lap of luxury. he turns lonely and cynical. he is drummed into this inhumane and cold creature whose life is dedicated to upholding royal traditions and dignity. While he never turns cold truly , he masters the art of wearing a cold indifferent but charismatic persona (a mask so as to speak). people assume that his mask is reality and shy away from him making him even more cynical and lonely. even his parents are harsh and judgemental. remember the time when he tries to call the queen "mom" and recieves a harsh setdown for it
He lives a life like this for 14 years until hyorin (another person who wears a similar mask of sophistication ) steps into his life. she not only manages to induce some sense of intimacy in thier relationship but also comes across as an ambitious person (something prince could never afford). my guess is that he is so touched by this little intimacy that he convinces himself that he is in love with her . when he proposes her , he is turned down...he is sad but does not argue with her since he realises that her reasons for turning him down are true...she would indeed get stifled by royal rules (have you ever seen a more selfless and understanding guy?)
instead he marries chaegyung according to royal decree...at that point my guess is that in his mind it is a perverse revenge to see cold and uptight royal family deal with a unruly and childish commoner amongst them. while he is hurt by the fact that chaegyung married him for the money(she does sound like a golddigger at that point), he is also upset that she saw him propose hyorin (remember how he mentions to hyorin that he regrets that chaegyng saw him propose and being turned down). In all the royal couple is off to a rocky start. However he is sensitive to her needs even though he does not show it....
1) he actally watches the tv show aand tell chaegyung she is not that bad when she they figh and tells him that she is like the golddigger from a certain show
2) he gives her candies and so on on his own accord but pretends that yul sent it
3)he actually tries to give chaegyung time with her parents but pretends to be indifferent
4) he actually wants to go and stay at chaegyung's house becoz he realises that she won't be able to visit them without his presence.
5) he misses her in thailand and eats ramen with eggs(like she made for him) but never calls back.
ofcourse he assumes that not unlike him chaegyung too married him out of obligation and family desperation and so keeps assuring her that he will set her free when the time comes......little does he realise that issue of divorce makes chaegyung sad and not happy becoz she loves him. he is jealous like crazy when he sees her with yul and sometimes he pretends to ignore her , at others he gets mad but then apologises (in his mind , he does not have right to hurt her). he yearns for her company and tells her that he feels empty without her or that she should come to him becoz she makes him feel better (in his usual tightlipped insulting way). he does not want her to worry about hyorin because from his point of view he never intends to commit adultery or even keep up at that relationship ...sowhat is the use of raking up the past again and again and getting sad over it. however everytime chaegyung bows down to hyorin , she not only acknowledges the past but also indirectly says that she will let shin go without a fight...and this is what upsets shin. also he is unable to understand (neither did i for that matter) why chaegyung would stick with yul when she knows what he wants and it is impossible. when he is hurt in horse accident ...he searches for his wife amongst people caring for him and gets mad when he sees her taking care of yul.
he does not take a step towards her until she accepts that she loves him in episode23 and then he is ready to fight for her even if it means going against his family.remember he tells his father he will not exile her...no matter what the cost. another aspect of his character is that he has no confidence in himself as a person. when he abdicates the throne , he is concerned that his wife may not love him anymore . he still does not pressure her into anything but tries to accept her decision..(he says that it seems she desires her educational tour more that him...apparently his heart with her has lost its standing) . In some ways ...he must have a lot of pentup emotions when he realised that his father had an illicit relationship with power hungry tae hwang (yul's mother) and now yul is going down the same route. you see his raw emotions when he searches desperately for chaegyung and ends up hitting yul , or when he records kissing chaegyung or even when he looks sadly at her photos. there is always something simmering beneath his polish and charisma.
incidentally i understand why royals are expected to be uptight...they hold seats of power and thier display of emotions and humanity makes them vunerable to manipulation. while females are expected to show innocence and warmth with grace, royal males are often expected to maintain a stoic outlook and a strong unshaken demeneanor. in the show too ...initially hyorin is used to manipulate prince shin...he keeps getting hurt and suffers but hides it beneath his show of indifference and so the evil plans fail...then they end up zeroing on chaegyung to manipulate the prince. They succeed only becoz prince is unable to manage an unruffled(cold) attitude.
actually if you think about it prince shin and yul never do anything for themselves(exception is yul's desire for chaegyung). while everything shin does is for royal family, everything yul does is for his mother.
MNMS: prince shin's relationship with hyorin falls in gray area. he is unable to discard her and lives with her memory initially (probably even dreams of returning back to her) since he has no intimacy as of yet with his wife. In a way he is the guy who is unable marry some one he likes and knows. he keeps those things (treasures ) with him simply becoz he believes that he will eventually divorce chaegyiung and go back to hyorin. however as he gets closer to chaegyung, hyorin is pushed back in background and those treasures lie with him forgotten. A problem arises when hyorin refuses to take that lying down...she pushes to get closer to shin and shin in his guilt and kindness is unable to thwart her though he keeps mentioning that she should not wait for him (it is interesting to see that when his friends insult chaegyung in her absence in horseclub , he insults them back much to the surprise of everyone). in thialand he gets mad at hyorin for following him but hyorin plays on his kindheartedness to get him to play along her plans. Infact he basically tells hyorin off at every occasion after his b'day party and even in party he countinously scans chaegyung's face to gauge her reaction though he does not react just then. you have to understand that here we are talking about a 19 year old teenager who has to let go of the only shining beacon in his life to keep up with royal decree and his responsibilities
let me tellyou a secret ...first time even i zipped/fast forwarded through the episodes and did not enjoy the show much but second time, i saw all the episodes in thier entirety and that gave me a better grasp and understanding of characters. shin never displays his affections in front of chaegyung but pins for her when she is not there. if you fast forward ...you miss out on all those scenes. i suggest you take time with this show and go back again
As for the rest ...women have a complex...they love to know that they are able to change thier paramour's character with thier love...it is the epitome of being cherished.hence all of us nurse the dream of loving a bad boy and change him into someone good (change a lion into mewling cat so as to speak)
