CHAPTER 2

Arjun frowned. What nonsense she was talking about?

Arjun: Yeh kaisa majag hai Riya?

Riya looked at her pleadingly. Her eyes were begging him to trust her.

Riya: Please Arjun believe me. Tumhe mere bato pe viswas nehi aa raha hai? Thik hai. Yehi paas mein ek gao hai. Main peechle bar akar wahi gyi thi. Chalo aabhi waha chalte hai.

Arjun: Par Riya haam bakioko chodke kaise jyenge? Unlogoko wapas ane do. Phir chalte hai.

Riya thought for a while then spoke up again.

Riya: Arjun unlogoko ane mein ek ya do ghanta lag jyega. Tabtak haam enquary karke ate hai. Jyada time nehi lagega.

Arjun sighed in irritation. How on earth he will make this stubborn female understand that he was arguing just for her own sake. She was injured and on top of that sick. She wouldn’t be able to bear this amount of stress. He felt like banging his head on the brick wall.But he composed himself. Riya was giving him puppy dog eyes which were not helping a bit. He gave up.

Arjun: All right. Chalo.

Riya sighed in relief. Arjun helped her getting up. She was about to turn when she felt Arjun’s hand on her. She froze on her tracks. Arjun noticed but stayed quite. He dusted the dead leaves and dirt from her and then from himself.

After finished dusting Arjun took the backpack at his shoulder and start walking. After few minutes Arjun frowned. He checked the watch and again started walking. After few minutes hestopped walking again.

Riya: Kya hua Arjun?

Arjun: Riya haam pechle adhe ghantese chal rahe hai. Aabtak hame road tak pouch jana chahye tha. Likin road to dur ki baad mujhe to tracks bhi nehi mil raha.

Riya face paled. She moved closer toArjun.

Riya: Isska matlab haam galat raste pe aye hai?

Arjun’s frowned deepened.

Arjun: Nehi Riya. Rasta wahi hai.But for some weird reason the tracks and the road disappeared.

Riya: Aisa kaise ho sakta hai Arjun?

Arjun was about to answer when Riya’s eyes fall on the dark figure a few feet distance.

Whole team was on their way back. They were walking and looking here and there hoping that they might find Soha somewhere. After a few minutes Shree stopped walking. Sameer frowned.

Sameer: Kya hua Shree?

Shree scratched his head.

Shree: Sir yeh compass kuch ajeeb sabehave kar raha hai.

Sameer: What do you mean?

Without answering Shree just showed him the compass. The rest of the team lean in to see the problem. True the compass was behaving weirdly. They should point towards the west. Instead the hand of the compass was moving clockwise in an unbelievable speed. All looked at each other. They were clearly puzzled. Sameer composed himself soon. After all he is the chief. He will have to be strong for the sake of his team.

Sameer hold himself up and cleared his throat. Everybody looked at him.

Sameer: Guys hame hamara walk resume karna chahye. Haam yaha ruk bhi nehi sakte. Kisi bhi karke haame Rawte aur Riya ko dhundna padega and yaha se nikalna padega.

All nodded in a grim face. They discussed which way to go. Then choose a way and start walking.

Riya hugged Arjun tightly and hide her face in his broad chest. Even Arjun got scared but soon he gathered his courage and spoke up in a brave tone.

Arjun: Who is there?

That dark figure didn’t answer. It was eight feet tall. It was not moving either. Arjun started towards it to inspect but Riya didn’t budge.

Arjun: Riya main bas issse dekhna chahta hoom. Dekho it is not moving at all. Let’s go.

Reluctantly Riya let him go and started walking. When they reached Arjun focused the flashlight on it. It was a scarecrow. Though a creepy one if you ask. It was hanging in an eight feet long old bamboo. It totally looked like a human. Anybody would mistake it as human from far. But if you look closely you will noticed the odds. It’s eyes were hollow. It was made of sacks. But how the hell they gave it a human like shape was still a mystery. In his hands there was a scythe. And for some unknown the blade had dried blood in it.

Even Arjun had to suppress a shudder. Though he never believes in such things but the scarecrow was creeping him out. He was moving the torch here and there when he noticed an old man sitting in the root of a tree. Arjun gestured Riya towards him. Both went to him. Riya let out a surprised gasp.

Riya: Sarpanch ji aap?

That man looked up. He narrowed his eyes.

Sarpanch: Kya main aap ko janta hoom?

Riya crouched down.

Riya: Main hoom Riya Anand. Main ayi thi yaha do saal pehle. Aapko yaad nehi? Vishnu aur Soha ko dhund ne.

Sarpanch’s eyes became clearer and focused. He trembled.

Sarpanch: Yaad aya. Aap aapne dostke sath aye the kisi ko dhunde. Par aab yaha wapas kiyu aye? Maine aap se mana kya tha na ki yaha kabhi mat ana?

Now Arjun hold up a hand to stop him.

Arjun: Ek minute. Yeh kaise ho sakta hai? Soha haame raste pe mili. Ussnehi hi hame yaha lyi usski pati ko dhundne.

That sarpanch’s pale face became paler.

Sarpanch: Aaplog chale jye yaha se. Rat ko 12 bajne se aaplog yaha se chale jye. Warna Banshee aaplogo ko nehi chodega.

Arjun crouched down and looked straight at the old man’s eyes.

Arjun: Hame janna hai ki yeh sab kyaho raha hai. Itne sare ajeeb ghatnaye kiyu ho raha hai. Batye hame.

Sarpanch: Thik hai. to suno. Ek bat yaad rakhna main jo bhi keh raha hoom sab sach hai. Bhagwan kasam.

Sarpanch leaned in the tree and satrted his story.

Sarpanch: Hajaro barso pehle iss elake mein log do para shaktio ki puja karte the. Acchai, shanti, prem, ahingsa kidevi Vannir aur burai, hingsa, krodh aur papachar ka devta Banshee. Vannir kumari devi thi. Isslye Banshee ke anusari Banshee ke shaqti badane ke lye usske naam pe kumar ladkio ki bali chadate the. Dhere dhere Banshee ka atyachar badta gya. Gaowalo ne Vannir ke paas aarj kya ki woh Banshee ke khelaaf kuch kare. But Banshee was a God. And you cannot kill a God. So, Vannir ne Banshee ko yaha issi jungle mein kyed kar lya. Aur sabko chetavni di ki koi bhi Banshee ka naam bhina le. Gods fed on believe. Dhere dhere log Banshee ko bhol gye aur Banshee yaha kyad raha. Par log dhere dhere Vannir ko bhi bhool gye. Logone usska upasana chod dya. Banshee pe Vannir ki jaduo kiasar kaam hota gya. Do saal pehle gao mein se ek admi ne Banshee ka naam lya. Usse jagana chahta tha woh. Banshee iss dunya mein ana chahta tha. Woh admi to sirf ek jarya tha. Banshee ka iss dunya mein punragaman hua. Ussi din woh teengadi se yaha ja rahe the. Badkismati se unlogoki gadi bhi yehi kharab ho gya.

Riya couldn’t help but speak up.

Riya: But woh log teen nehi do the.

Sarpanch stared at him with sad eyes.

Sarpanch: Nehi. Maine aapse jhoot kaha tha. Woh teen the. Admi, usski patni aur usski choti behen. Wohlog uss admi ke ghar pe ruke jissne Banshee ko jagya tha. Uss admi ne dhoke se un teeno ko jungle bhej dya. Uss choti si masum kumari hone ke wajase bali chad gyi. Woh admi Banshee ka khana ban gya aur woh ladki. Soha. Usske jarye Banshee aab apna shikar pakadta hai.

Arjun was having a nagging suspicious that all the things the old man said is true. But still he couldn’t believe it.

Arjun: Yeh sab bakwas hai. Aisa kuch nehi hota.

Sarpanch let out a sarcastic laugh.

Sarpanch: Maine aaplogose kaha tha waqt rehte bhag jye. Aap nehi mane. Banshee jag gya hai. Dekhye Banshee jag gya hai.

Arjun and Riya turned to the scarecrow. It was looking straight at them. The suddenly to their utter horror it disappeared in front of their eyes.

The Scarecrow-

Soha-

Oh god..oh my god..

Ye kya hua..?Ariya gaon me jane ke liye nikale lekin woh rasta dund hi nahi paye..

Aur ye sarpanch mil gaya unhe..

Woh waha kya kar raha he..aur woh itna bindass hoke story suna raha he..

Muze toh ye sarpanch bhi gadbad lag raha he..

Ab ye kya hua..?woh scarecrow Ariya ke samne gayab ho gaya..??

Ab kahi aisa na ho ke woh turn ho toh sarpanch bhi gayab ho jaye .

Udhar baki ki team bhi jungle me hi bhatak rahi he..sabki jaan khatre me he.

CHAPTER 3:

Riya shuddered visibly. Out of instinct Arjun pulled her in his arms and rubbed her back. He was also pretty much shaken but he composed himself for her sake. He looked back at the sarpanch.

Arjun: How do we stop him? Koi na koi rasta to jaror hoga usse rokne ka?

The sarpanch shook his head negatively. A shadow of some unknown emotions passed through his eyes. In the faint light of moon Arjun couldn’t recognize them but he was sure none them were positive.

Sarpanch: You cannot defeat a God. Bhag jaoyaha se. Kabhi wapas mat ana. Agar tumlog iss jungle se jinda nikal sakte ho to yehi tumlogoki sabse badi jeet hogi. Mujhe yaha se nikalne ka rasta malom hai. Chalo main tum donoko le chalta hoom.

Sarpanch was about to go another way but Riya stopped him.

Riya: Haam akele nehi aye. Hamare sath hamare kuch dost bhi aye hai. Unhe chodke haam nehi ja sakte.

Sarpanch frowned while Arjun looked at her with awe.

Sarpanch: Haam logoke paas jyada waqt nehi hai. Haame yaha se jaldi nikalna hoga.

Riya smiled a sad smile.

Riya: Jyada se jyada kya hoga? Woh hame mar dalega? Agar aaj haam unlogoke bagay yaha se chale jye to haar pal ek nyi mout marenge.

Sarpanch sighed.

Sarpanch: Thik hai. Bad mein hame mat kehna ki hamne chetavni nehi dya.

With Sarpanch they started walking. Arjun was seeing Riya with a new angle. He never knew Riya can be this selfless. He always thought her as a pampered princess with little sense of reality. Always worried about herself and no care for others. Only once he got the chance to see this side of her. But he brushed that away.

Sameer cursed under his breath. It’s been hours they are walking till no sign of Soha. Let alone Arjun and Riya. He started wondering how long they will have to be in this creepy jungle. It was entirely his fault. He was the one who found out the shortcut way from Mumbai to Delhi. He found it in an old map. The road had been removed from the new map. Who knows why. He was the one who insisted that they should take the shortcut. Now all he wants is to bang his head in the wall.

Flashback-

Sameer was running through some old files in record room. He sneezed for the sixth time. It had so much dust everywhere. He cursed in mind. He decided that he will fire the bi from her work. After all it’s her work to keep everything clean. He was about to climbed down from the ladder when some files fall on his head. Along with some dust and spider. He groaned. He could’ve sent others. But his bad luck none was present in the office at that late hour of night. And he needed the specific file immediately. So, he had to come himself. He bent down to gather the files when his eyes fall on a scroll. He frowned. He took the scroll and opened it. It was a map. A very old map. So many roads that had been blocked or long forgotten were printed there. Sameer found it quite amusing. He was inspecting the map when he found a road from Mumbai to Delhi. It was an abandoned road. He then and there decided that they are going to take the road. It will be an adventure. Though others tried to discourage him but he didn’t pay any heed.

Flashback ends

Now they are stuck in this jungle just for him. It was his fault. As if sensing his thought Aisha placed her hand on his arms and gave him a reassuring squeeze. Somehow it calmed Sameer’s wandering thought. He took a deep breath. Then he nodded at Aisha. She also nodded back. He dragged them into this mess and he will drag them out.

Shree looked around the jungle and gulped nervously. He is a technical expert and doesn’t believe in ghosts and unearthly stuff. But this jungle is giving him creeps. For some unknown he is feeling fear. An unearthly fear. It slipped through his spine and made the hair of his neck stood up. He hesitantly looked here and there. He looked at Chotu. All the blood had been drained from Chotu’s face. He looked at Liza. She was practically sweating. With one hand he held Chotu’s hand and with other he held Liza’s hand and squeezed. No matter what they will go.

Arjun looked at Riya. She looked worn out. With the injuries and high dose medicines was taking their toll on her. He looked closely at her. The place of the injury was soaked in blood. He cursed himself. He should’ve thought about that. Her injuries were still fresh. Her face strained in pain. Her full body was drenched in sweat. He looked around them. There was pin drop silence around them. Whole forest was waiting for something to happen. Though his rational mind argued him to go on and find his friends. But seeing her state he just couldn’t do that. He came to a halt causing others to stop.

Arjun: Haam yaha thodi der baith jate hai. Bohot time se chal rahe hai.

Sarpanch and Riya nodded. Sarpanch went to find some fruits for them and Riya sat in the trunk of a huge tree. She was panting visibly. She was seeing black and red dots in front of her eyes. She was so tired. She didn’t have an ounce of energy anymore. She was thankful to Arjun for giving them rest. She closed her eyes and leaned against the tree.

Arjun looked at her state. He put the duffel bag down he was carrying and brought out the first aid box. He opened it and took some gauze, bandage, scissor and ointment. He crouched down in front of her and gently touched her face. She jerked out and opened her eyes.

Arjun: Ssshhh. It’s me. Arjun.

Riya was shocked beyond wits. What the hell was he doing? He pulled out the bandage of her injured area. He cleaned them and tied down fresh bandage. He did all these things without uttering a single word. He may be indifference. He may not love her. But he will be there. In every breath, in every step. He will support her in every state. Riya’s eyes moistened thinking that. She didn’t know if she ever can finish thanking her God for giving her so much happiness.

Suddenly Arjun stiffened. Riya looked at him and found him staring past her shoulder. A hissing sound came from behind. They got up and slowly Riya turned around.

Behind them reared a nightmarish creature. Its lower body was python, dark brown with creamy swirls of scales. Near the abdomen, the scales became so fine, they glittered, and stretching tight over a human upper body with a female face that looked like it belonged to a fifteen-year-old. She looked at them with emerald-green eyes.

Riya whispered in a raspy voice.

Riya: Lamia.

Wooo..

What an update..my gosh..

So Ariya n sarpanch pehle baki ki team ko dundane ka decision lete he....

Idhar Sam khud ko kos raha he ke kyo usane ye route liye delhi jane ke liye..

I wonder the map Sam thinking about was just by chance there ??

Though Arjun is not agreeing that he loves her..but he really cares for her..

N now what creepy creature then saw..?

Is that the same girl Vishnu's sister?

N they saw this girl when the sarpanch is not there.?

Sarpanch is fishy somewhat..?

First I thought it's just someone who is using the old time stories to hide their wrong did in jungle..

But now I m getting vibes of some supernatural things..though I have not left the thought of my first doubt..

Let's see what will happen?
