CHAPTER 1

Sakshi sat at her bedroom window, her knees drawn to her chest, hands folded over it, gazing out at the Rawte mansion across the road. Silent tears rolled down her face as she watched the procession coming down the road. A beautifully, decorated Bentley that held the newly- weds and a series of cars following behind. The traditional hooting began to alert the neighbourhood of the couples arrival, of-course those who were not on the guest list which weren't many as the Rawte's were known for their extravagant functions and even more extravagant guest lists. Sakshi watched as Ayesha and her husband. Sameer climbed out of the BMW, behind the Bentley, opening the back doors for Vandana and Ashok Rawte . They all walked up to the Bentley to start the list of rituals that were to follow for the newest couple in town, Arjun and Aradhya Rawte.

Sakshi couldn't stand to watch it anymore. She ran to her bed, falling face first on it, covering her head and letting her sobs be drowned out by the cheers of joy happening across the road.

THREE DAYS LATER

''Sakshi….. Sakshi….'', ''I'm coming Bua.'' Sakshi rushed down the stairs to see why her Bua was was calling her so profusedly.'' Arre, Bua, What is it?'', she asked trying to catch her breath and feeling irritated when she saw that her Bua was perfectly fine. Of-course like any other normal human-being when being called like that, one would think that something bad had happened but then again, Bua was far from normal.

''There's a call from Arjun beta's house.'' Sakshi felt her chest constrict at the mention of Arjun's name. She hoped to god that it was not him on the phone. She knew that she had to eventually face him and explain why she hadn't attended the wedding and then there was the case of her not contacting him for the last three days. The longest that she had gone without talking to him was two hours. ''Sakshi, the phone. God when will this girl learn to pay attention?'', rambled Sarika Jha, Sakshi's widowed Bua and only family.

Sakshi took the phone from her Bua with shaky hands and put it to her ear, ''Hello,'', she said in an equally shaky voice. ''Okay, Kaka, I'll be there in a few minutes.'', she put the phone down. ''Who was that?'', asked Bua. ''Chirag Kaka. He said that our mail ended up at there again. I'm going to get it. I won't be long.'', Sakshi ran up the stairs to grab her dupatta but stopped in front of the mirror. ''You can do this.'', she said to herself and took a deep breath, praying that she would get the mail without bumping into Arjun. Not now atleast, she wasn't ready to face him.

As she walked out the door, she heard her Bua telling her to congratulate Arjun and Aradhya.

AT THE RAWTE HOUSE

Women of the neighbourhood flocked in for the face revealing ceremony. It had been pushed back a few days as Aradhya had fallen sick after the wedding. Vandana and her daughter, Ayesha stood at the door welcoming them as they walked in. ''Mom, I really don't understand the importance of this ritual. It just gives these women another reason for gossip and criticising.'', said Ayesha in an annoyed tone. ''Ayesha, watch your mouth. That is no way for a married woman to talk and besides when you got married, you also went through this. So I don't see the problem.'', scolded Vandana. She turned to the women and smiled at them, motioning for them to go inside.''Ayesha show them to the lounge area.'', she gave Ayesha a cheeky look. ''Ji mum. Come Aunty.'', replied Ayesha in a an annoyed tone that only her mother could recognise.

Vandana welcomed the last of the women to walk in and followed them to the lounge. She motioned for them to sit and turned to Ayesha, ''Ayesha, tell Chirag Kaka to serve the snacks and juice. ''Yes, Mum.''

Sakshi just made it to the door of the Rawte house when she spotted Chirag Kaka, taking a bouquet of flowers inside. ''Kaka…!!!'', she called out to him. ''Arre, Sakshi Bitiya. Let me take these flowers in and I'll give you the mail.'', he addressed. Sakshi smiled and nodded. This man was such a kind soul. '' Chirag Kaka, Mum wants you to serve the snacks and juice now. Sakshi, tum yaha? Why are you standing here, come on inside. Mum will be so happy to see you.'', said Ayesha excitedly. ''Di, I came to get our mail. It ended up here again. Kaka, I'll take the mail myself, just tell me where it is.'' ''Its on the chest near the lounge.'', he answered, leaving to get the snacks. Sakshi spoke again, ''Di, tell Ma, I'll see her another day. For sure.'', ''Okay if you insist.''

Sakshi proceeded to the chest and Ayesha went back to the lounge. Unfortunately one of the nosey woman spotted Sakshi and turned to vandana and said, ''Vandana, isn't that girl Arjun's friend? Why is she still coming here? Arjun is married now. It doesn't look right.'', Ayesha was about to answer when herr mother said, ''Ayesha go bring Aradhya, its time for the ceremony.'', Ayesha nodded and went towards the staircase.

Vandana turned to the lady and said,'' Oh Sheela, you know how Arjun is, always looking for charity work. He named it friendship but we all know its charity work. She'll be gone soon.'', she finished off sweetly. Unaware that two pair of ears had heard her.
