She is the one to stand out from the crowd. Amdavadi actress Shital Shah has acted in TV shows like Kahaani Chandrakanta Ki and done films like My Friend Ganesha and Kis Hudh Tak. But after a conscious decision to take a break from the small screen due to lack of creative satisfaction, Shital is back on the small screen as a super cop in Har Yug Me Aaega Ek Arjun. TOI caught up with the actress to find out more about her new show.
"Arjun has been a male-centric serial. But it is about time that TV saw something other thanthe saas-bahu sagas and had a tough and intelligent girl cop." Shital, who joins the show after actress Sana Khan quit it, says, "This is a new character. I am not replacing anyone so there is no risk of fitting into what is already established. The previous character was a trainee. My character is that of a full-fledged cop." Ask her how she prepared for the tough job and she says, "Doing this show was a last minute decision on my part. I just signed the contract one night and started shooting the next day. So I haven't done much yet. Yes, it involves a lot of stunts and action sequences and this is something completely out of my comfort zone. But I do hope to do my best and be the female Akshay Kumar on TV!"
The actress, who continues to have a strong opinion about the content on the small screen, says, "Not much has changed on television in the past few years. It definitely lacks in mature content. I'm sick and tired of watching marriages on TV continuously as 90% of shows are in that format. But Arjun is a good change from all that; it has a proper beginning and an end in each episode." About TV, she adds, "TV has always been regressive in the presentation of their women. They don't look beyond love and marriage. While films are male-dominated, TV is more of a female oriented medium. I hope to break away from the mould. While women on TV use a lot of glycerine to grab eyeballs, I will be able to do the same through my act."
With a number of crime shows now on different Hindi GECs, Shital says, "Indian TV needed a different subject other than the regular dramas. There has been a little shift in the audiences' tastes now. " The actress, for whom painting is therapeutic, says, "Whenever I get any free time, I pick up my pencil and just start sketching. We have an arthouse in Ahmedabad and we keep holding art exhibitions there." Shital, who is also a trained Odissi dancer, has been on the stage since she was three years old. But during the break that she took from TV, she has been travelling the world with Paresh Rawal as a part of his theatre group. She says, "He is my absolute guru in acting. Acting on the stage in front of live audience has been a fantastic experience. It has really refined me as an actor and has made me braver than ever before."
