[Chapter 2]
A woman scorned, is a woman to be feared.
In hindsight, Arjun would kick himself for realizing that he knew that fact about women – for he was a man who had once enjoyed the bliss that came with all the mayhem of marriage.
He knew women. He knew the furrow that would form between Roshni's eyebrows when she was upset with him – a trait he had also noticed in Riya many a times. He knew he had upset her. He knew he had pushed too many times, and perhaps the last time was a push too hard in the opposite direction.
What was a man to do, though, when his feelings were no longer in his control?
When emotions are mixed up, when feelings give rise to uncharacteristic behaviour, hindsight be damned! Such was the turmoil of our hero as he walked in on the woman who had made home in his mind ever since she'd attacked him on their first meeting.
It would be a blatant lie to suggest that he was surprised to see her happily chatting away into her phone. The gall of the woman to put him on an edge the entire day, while she spared him no thought! Moreover, it looked like she was shamelessly flirting with someone on the phone. He quickly took note of the time, and knew he would employ Shree's help to find out who Riya was speaking to on the phone at such a time.
Before he had the chance to ask Riya anything, her assistance walked in. All flustered and looking like she would probably get fired for not doing the job right, she quickly apologized.
"I'm so sorry ma'am. He just barged in. I tried to stop him, but he didn't listen to me. I've called security, and they'll be here shortly to escort him out."
As Arjun raised his eyebrows at this comment, Riya quickly intervened before her new assistance got a formal telling off from the man who didn't realize the depth of hurt his words could cause.
Silently dismissing him before he could even open his mouth, Riya answered, "It's fine Esha. This is ACP Arjun Raute. He works on the 3rd floor, where I used to work previously. Don't mind his rudeness, it's a character trait." Although she hadn't meant to hurt Arjun, for that wasn't her style, Arjun felt a warm feeling of shame linger in his spine. He knew that comment was repayment for the hurt he'd caused her.
It was okay though, he silently reminded himself. If she was hurt, that meant she still cared. It was indifference he wouldn't be able to handle. Her anger was a good sign.
With a smile, and without still looking at Arjun she continued, "You can go home now Esha, I'm almost done here myself, and will be heading home soon. Thanks for all your help today. I'll see you tomorrow."
As Esha walked off, relived because her boss was so kind, Riya started to put her papers away, waiting for Arjun to speak.
She needed to indulge in the mundane tasks in order to calm her nerves that were buzzing just because Arjun was in front of her.
To say that she was surprised to see him here wouldn't be accurate. Although she knew she would eventually see him around the ETF office, she hadn't expected it to happen so soon.
She still could not believe the fact that she had taken up a new position at ETF. Although as she was discussing the move with Sameer Rathore, it seemed almost as if she was running away, but once the move had been finalized, and she walked into her new office this morning, she felt as if she had made the right decision. Even while she did field work with Sameer Sir's team, she basically did research – within her new role, she could fork out the right details needed for each case.
She had wanted to work on the field though, but she knew that she wasn't made to do it. She realized that she would never be able to live with herself if she killed another human being, no matter what their crime. It also had another advantage: it would give her time away from Arjun.
The moment she had seen him, when she's mistaken him for a criminal, a apart of hers had become his. And this was clearly becoming a problem.
The woman inside her – the woman who had worshipped him, idolized him, the woman who continued to love him despite his brashness with her, needed time to separate herself from him.
He wasn't ready to move on, it was clear. And she wasn't going to put herself in the position where he could hurt here; even if it was unknowingly. She wasn't ready to have her feelings continually hurt by him, and so she had decided to put some needed distance between the two.
As she packed her belongings, Arjun remained by the door, his arms crossed across his chest, which was so characteristic of him. Not breaking her silence – because she knew if she did, she would never get answers, she finished locking up, picked up her cellphone and purse and made her way towards the door.
If all Arjun wanted to do was pick a corner to brood in, then he could do that all he wanted. Heck, if he really liked his silence and solitude so much, what better way to spend it then by being alone in her office.
Almost to the door now, she used every ounce of her willpower to not look at him. Heaving a sigh, she turned the handle of the door, only to feel herself pressed into the same door.
Before she even realized what had happened, Arjun had grabbed her hand, turned her around, and locked her between the door and himself.
