Chapter 3

"Bhai dekh na, chutti khatam, monday aa gaya! 15 min mein pehla lecture hai na?"

"Haan na yaar! Aur phir aaj mujhe college ke baad ye saare papers bhi sort karne hai, bohot kaam hai...." Carrying a huge pile of papers, Anuj walked across the corridor along with Bunty. "Hai kya iss mein?"

"Kuch applications hai alag alag competitions mein participate karne ke liye, baaki ke iss saal ke annual gathering ke liye applications hai. Songs, dance performances, stand-up comedies, drama, etc ke liye. Toh pehle competition aur gathering ke doh groups karne hai phir un dono type ke applications ko aur aage sort karke, approve karke phir auditions ke liye schedule banana hai."

"Main bhi aata hoon help karne, ho jayega sab phataphat."

All papers went haywire, as Anuj crashed into a fellow classmate while rounding a corner. He internally cursed his misfortune, but took it all back the very next moment - it was not a misfortune, but in fact a fine stroke of luck, as the classmate turned out to be none other than his Anu! Clutching her forearms to steady her balance, he gazed at the various emotions flitting across her features - surprise, panic, guilt..... wait, was that a hint of recognition? 'Pehchaan liya? Kaise? Ho hi nahi sakta.... Maine kabhi khudko introduce bhi nahi kiya....' His internal monologue was broken as she handed him the papers she had picked up alongside him and went ahead towards the classroom.

"Usne kya kahaa, tune kuch nahi suna, hai na? Poora kho gaya tha tu to!!"

"Usne kuch kaha - kya kaha usne?? Bataa naa!"

"Kuch khaas nahi - "

"Ahahaha, Bunty, usne kahi hui har cheez mere liye bahut khaas hai, meri ragon se rooh tak, woh sirf hi basti hai... tu bata na!!"

"Ha, woh bahut guilty feel kar rahi thi iss sab keliye, toh bolkar gayi hai teri help karegi sorting mein, college ke baad 5 baje. Usee canteen milna papers lekar, thik hai na?"

"Lekin cultural hall -"

"Tu khoya hua tha, to maine bol diya waha koi practice hone wali hai.... Aur waise bhi pehli baar baat karega usse, toh acchi jagah choose kar na, yeh cultural hall kya hai yaar!"

"Bunty, bhai thanks!!"

"Kuch nahi reh chalta hai, tune bhi yeh sab bahut kiya hai mere liye"

Making her way towards the classroom, never even once did Anu think that she would meet the teenaged version of her friend in this manner. She had known there would be quite a few dissimilarities between this Anuj and the Anuj she knew, but they were considerably more than what she expected. For instance, he was noticeably bolder in comparison, his intense eyes didn't waver even when she had seen him gazing at her. Though that small smile - a slight upturn of the corners of his lips, that the Anuj she knew, wore while looking at her when he thought she wasn't looking was still unchanged. His eyes held a glint of ardent, deep longing; that strongly struck a chord with her. They spoke of great affection.

She knew that he had not listened to a single word that she had said, but chose not to call him out on it. His friend had carried on the conversation on his behalf. Entering the classroom, she spotted her friend Devika and went to sit beside her. She narrated the morning incident to her, "- aur isiliye main shyam ko anuj ko canteen mein milne jaa rahi hoon."

"Ohh, Anuj matlab woh -"

"Haan, Mr Shayar Kapadiya, Cultural Committee ka secretary," she replied, giving a sharp look, quelling all teasing from Devika at least temporarily, "Baad mein baat karte hain na Devu, abhi nahi.."

Little did she know, that the subject of their discussion had heard her nickname. It made his day. Basking in contentment, he took his seat at the back.

The rest of the was rather uneventful. As the clock ticked ahead, his anticipation grew. The bell rung, signalling the end of the last lecture. He headed towards the canteen area, eyes seeking out Anu.

"Woh corner wale table par baithe?" Her melodious voice called out to him from behind. "Sure, chalo!" He answered, as he turned to face her. They sat at the table and began working on the task at hand. The ambience was quite pleasant, with a cool, gentle breeze blowing from the open window. The radio placed near the counter played soothing songs. A comfortable tranquillity reigned between them.

As warm, honey brown eyes met doelike, innocent ones, the radio played,

'Aaja sanam, madhur chandni mein hum - tum mile, toh veerane meh bhi aa jayegi bahaar.....'

"Tum coffee peena pasand karogi? Aadha kaam toh ho gaya hai, baaki ka coffee peekar khatam karte hai..."

"Uhh, accha thik hai," she hesitatingly replied.

He brought over a coffee for each of them both. "Ek minute ha..." she said bringing out her purse to pay for her share.

"Aree nahi, rehne do!"

"Aise kaise mujhe bilkul accha nahi lagega."

In the end he ended up conceding to her. Having drunk the coffee, they resumed work. It took them about an hour to complete. Taking leave of each other, both went off on their own ways, back home, a noticeable, cheerful spring present in the steps. An evening spent well, indeed!
