SS: Another Chance at Life

It had been the auspicious day of Diwali. They had been celebrating so happily at her academy, and then the unthinkable had happened. The blissful evening was marred by Baa - no, Leela Shah's outburst.... Anu could no longer bear to call her Baa, after all that happened, she just couldn't. "Aaj se, abhi se, main aap se saare rishte tod rahi hoon Leela ji. Ab bas! Aaj ke baad, chahe kuch bhi ho jaye, mujhse milne, baat karne kabhi mat aaiyega. Main bhi nahi aaungi, hum me koi sambandh nahi - yeh patthar ke upar ki lakir, vaada hai mera!!" With these parting words, she had brought her Baapuji with her, away from all the madness.

It had taken a lot of persuasion to make Baapuji have some sleep. As Anu sat in front of the Mandir in her house, the memory of the evening's events wreaked havoc in her mind. The whirlwind of her thoughts seemed to keep on raging endlessly, until it finally settled on the one person who, nowadays occupied a major part of her thoughts......

'Anuj'...

He was the one who had given her the utmost respect that could have been given to her, loved her selflessly for 26 years, stood by her, defended her. It was truly astounding, that whenever such situations cropped up, his actions always uplifted him in her eyes, made her respect him more. The guilt of not being able to return his feelings weighed heavily on her mind. This guilt, the evening incident, the constant caustic barbs, the post-storm event... she could feel her emotions go haywire. Panic clawed at her throat. A feeling of hopelessness siezed her from within. She prayed desperately for a happy life, free of such anguish, hoping against hope that her prayers would be answered. Little did she know, that He had definitely listened to her.

As she got up abruptly, dizziness hit her like a train. The ground seemed to sway under her feet and her vision started blurring, giving way to darkness as she lost the last bits of her consciousness.

The gentle rays of the early sun, the cheerful chirping of the birds slowly roused Anu from her slumber, as though breathing new life into her. Becoming more aware of her surroundings, she noticed that she was not in her own flat, neither was she in a hospital - in fact she was at her parents' place. Now slightly perplexed, she observed that even her attire was different. Had she been unconscious for long? What all had happened in between when she was passed out?

"Mujhe aate wakt der hone wali hai, thik hai? Mera intezar mat karti baithna..." Anu heard her father call out to her mother. Her father? But they had lost him decades back... how was this even possible? Was she dead? Had she finally snapped under the pressure? What was happening? These questions scared her, troubled her mind and put her control on her emotions at peril. She fought to keep her composure, which threatened spiral away under the panic.

Gathering up all the courage she had, she got up. Walking by the mirror nearly sent her into a hysterical bout, as a teenaged version of herself stared back from the mirror. Stamping down her inner turmoil ruthlessly, she wrenched back the command over herself. Checking the calendar confirmed what all the previous signs had been alluding to - she had woken up in her teenage years, the future she knew had been completely erased, and her past had now become her present.

"Anu, kya hua? Kahan khoi hai tu? Taiyar nahi hui ab tak? Kya kar rahi hai, tu thik to hai na?" Her mother's voice brought her back. Anu answered numbly,"Haan Maa, main thik hoon. Taiyar hoke mandir jaungi ha."

As she stepped inside the temple, she broke down, thinking of her loved ones left behind. Pouring out all the feelings she had kept a lid over, Anu let it all out. She weeped, tears streaming down her doe-like eyes uncontrollably.

Calming down slowly, she came to a realisation that this was in fact a blessing, that lady luck was smiling brightly on her. She mulled over everything that had transpired. A new determination, a new hope ignited. She had a clean slate now. Armed with the knowledge of the future she had seen and lived once, she would begin anew. She will not make the same mistakes again. Creating a career, becoming independent before marriage, education, modernising herself - so much to do. Avoiding the Shahs was a must, for her sanity as well as theirs - Devika would be so proud!!

This time around, she would live her life as she deems fit, by her own rules. With a clear mind, she set off towards her home.......
