Part 3
"Tera mujhse hai pehle ka nata koi,
yuhi nahi dil lubhata koi,
jane tu ya jane na...
mane tu ya mane naa..."
'Comfortable?', he inquired as he set the wheels in motion and clicked buttons to set the AC on, the windows shut and open the rear-view mirrors.
'Yes', she nodded in affirmation and began to rearrange the pleats of her saree. She set her bag aside and adjusted the AC wings suitable to her.
Not finding her convinced yet, he asked, 'Do you want me to turn it up or down? The AC?'
'No. Its perfect!', she said and pulled out her diary and pen from the purse.
'Why don't you let Ms. Sarla know that we are on the way and give them an ETA', he commenced to talk about work in a very normal tone to lighten the tensed moment and make her feel comfortable again.
Anu obliged and did the needful. Slowly she relaxed and in the next twenty-five minutes both filled each other with updates of various things under their supervision. She was now adept at not only remembering the finer points of discussion which she religiously noted it down in the diary she always carried, sometimes in gujarati which Anuj found very endearing but also, she proposed and showed interest in ventures that lay beyond her scope of work. Anuj would consider her ideas, if convincing he would either ponder upon them him self or guide Anu to proactively take it ahead and if not feasible due to her lack of experience in the subject he would explain to her the cons of the same.
Anu found discussions with him very enriching. He was the most patient teacher who taught her business in a way she could understand. Never under estimated her rather encouraged her to always voice her thoughts without hesitation, Her once a husband Vanraj, had been everything opposite. Forget it Anu, he doesn't deserve even a moment in your thoughts.
They had crossed the toll and kept on highway at an average speed without waiting for any breaks. After about an hour and to give their discussion a break, Anuj turned up the radio which he usually did when driving long distance. Although Anu was his favourite company but music would only make it more pleasant.
Songs played one after the other. Both spoke about random topics, about traffic, about weather in general to fill In the gaps.
Anuj reciting couple of his mysterious shayaries, mysterious because Anu found It fascinating how poetic and enchanting he could be out of the blue. Little did she know she was his muse.
Just then the song, 'Ek pyaar ka nagma hai...maujo ki rawani hai...', filled the little silence that followed their last talks. And In a pleasant co Incidence both their hands lifted together to turn up the volume. His palm had covered her hand for a fraction of a second, his fingers slightly traced a random Iine on her skin, their eyes met, the slight smile and he had retreated his hand allowing her to do what they both intended to.
'I love this song', both said it together and acknowledged the other.
He noticed she did not pull back her hand in hesitation when his hand had touched hers. She probably didn't even register he thought it was brief but wait...her eyes...
Anu had always loved this song. She hummed the lyrics along and suddenly it dawned upon her that she had never mentioned about it to Vanraj. It never occurred to him to talk to her about her likes and dislikes. She realised they never engaged in any personal conversations. It was all about him and his likes and dislikes. In 26 years, she had never shared such a moment with him. Something as simple as listening to a favourite song together. At that instant her eyes fell on the man beside her.
...Her eyes...Her gaze lingered longer on him than his hand had on her. He had caught this from the comer of his eyes.
He looked straight, his hands steady on the wheel, lips curled slightly into a smile.
'Zindagi, aur kuch bhi nahi...teri meri kahani hai..., the song faded into silence.

'Bas yahi hai Anuj, look', she pointed at the hotel 'Welcome'. They had reached Baroda and their destination in 20 minutes after.
She had followed the maps and instructed directions to Anuj another thing she had learned from Kinjal, not surprising Anuj anymore.
Anuj drove in through the entrance skilfully, a slight nod acknowledging the prompt salutes from the staff till they reached the entrance. He speedily unfastened the seat belt and was out and about in seconds holding the door open for Anupama to alight the car. The valet had taken care of the rest.
He waited patiently till she had collected her belongings from car and stretched her legs while smoothening the creases off her saree.
'Chalein', he showed way and followed a pace behind. The gentleman he was, all this came naturally to him. Subconsciously always making way for the lady. He never liked them trailing behind - not his Anu.
Anu was used to his chivalry now. She was mighty impressed already, now all this felt more like a behaviour she deserved and secretly admired.

Conference Room:
'Hello Ms. Irani, Anuj Kapadia', Anuj shook hands with Sarlaji and pointing at Anu he added, 'Meet my Partner - Anupa..,'
'Hello Mrs. Kapadia', Sarla interrupted and collected Any's hands shaking it warmly ignoring the scandalised look on her face and her inaudible 'Jai Shri Krishna' that followed with folded hands.
'My business partner Anupama', Anuj corrected her politely.
'Oh, I am sorry', I just assumed you are "the business couples" we meet these days where business and life partners are same', she laughed at her own joke first and then apologised profusely to cover up her mistake.
'Jai shri Krishna.. please sit, please sit', she added. She introduced them to her team as well and somehow 10 minutes later Anupama and Anuj both felt at home.
They were treated warmly soon after Sarla realised that the two were not the typical corporates but sweet Gujarati people who knew business correctly.
Sarla Irani, aged 77 had an amusing personality. Short and skinny, dressed in fluorescent color and golden rimmed glasses she presented a very jaunty old Parsi woman. She had wanted to retire out of her duties of heading the Lion's club long back but her vigorous health and sunny nature had her peers hold on to her longer than she had anticipated.
Though adorable, she had this nasty habit of being nosy and speaking out her thoughts aloud without bothering. Like she'd just put the two in an awkward situation so easily without feeling much deterred about it.
What Anuj felt on Sarlaji addressing Anupama as Mrs Kapadia was a different story altogether. His heart had somersaulted and he was feeling giddy with happiness. While Anu, unaware of all this continued being cute.
They had a lengthy and fruitful discussion that lasted for almost 2 hours with rounds of questions and queries raised by the team and answered promptly and smartly by Anu and Anuj.
Lion's Club had planned to conduct some of their upcoming meetings and annual celebrations at the AK hotels.
Anuj and Anu's latest venture had created a buzz In the market and welcomed a lot of prospective clients aboard who desired AK Hotel group to host their events.
Anuj had gauged the lady's temperament correctly and was handling her very well. She was so smitten by him in the first few minutes that Anuj feared she would propose to adopt him by the end of the session.
Anu's simplicity had touched her heart too. Especially the team, they were in for a great surprise when she began to present the slides and led the meeting.
'... so, shall we sign the dotted line mam', Anuj concluded and relaxed back in his chair. Anu imitating him soon after. They moved in sync like a pair of eyes.
'Are you in a hurry son? .Chokri bhagi nai jaye," Sarlaji said cheekily. Itamused Anu how the journey from Mr. Kapadia to 'son' was faster than their travel from Ahmedabad to Baroda.
'No...No...not at all. Take your time. We want to ensure you are a Happy client in the end.'
'If you need any clarifications, you could reach me directly anytime', Anupama added. Sarlaji beamed at her and appraised her readiness. She paused for a second and looking straight at her she asked, 'Tell me what makes you happy?'
'umm... what? Sorry?', Anu looked surprised with her out of context question.
Can you make a Iist of things that will make you happy or smile?', she inquired of the two now. She snapped the pen shut and put her hands on the table and said, 'ok do one thing, all of you, even you guys', she spoke to her team, 'make a list of things that you want to do that will make you happy or smile'.
She looked around the confused faces and said, 'come on, It's not rocket science. Before we all get togetherto work let us introspect if we can make ourselves happy?' I believe only those who can make self-happy can make others happy.
This exercise will help me decide how to proceed further. Come on move your pens.
'Quick.', she barked.
Her commanding tone set everyone in action. Even Anu obediently turned to a fresh page in her diary and began to write. Silence fell as if it were an exam hall.
Anuj glanced around everyone, they had begun to think and write and so had Anu. He moved aside towards her trying to catch what she was writing so sincerely. Anuj knew Anu was fond of making lists, she always made them — the to do lists, client lists, items on the menu list, ghar jake kaam karne ki list, Devika ki favourite food list, ye list...wo list...and so on.
He wondered if he was ever a part of such a list anywhere. Sure, why not?
Sarlaji found him goofing around. She tapped on the blank page in his hand with her nails coercing him to write. Flustered he pressed the bridge of his glasses and began to write.
Sarlaji observed everyone and clearly enjoyed how the expressions on each one's face changed from confusion to a smile as they put words to their thoughts.
'Even If they work hard on achieving one, Just one, it will push them pursue others, she thought optimistically.
'Anuj didn't need much time to think. It was simple and very easy yet he had not put it in words. His paper still remained blank beyond the heading..."Things I want to do that make me Happy."
A smile lingered on his lips as if mocking this stupid activity yet challenging himself, he cautiously wrote down just one point which summarised his list perfectly.
"Things I want to do that make me Happy."
1) Fulfil Anu's List.
He folded the paper quietly and stealthily slid it into the breast pocket of his suit and quickly glanced at Anu whose eyes were already on him. She raised her eyebrows questioning why he hid the sheet and all he did was make a with "T" his hand indicating it to be a top secret and zipped his lips.
She giggled at his funny antiques and stuck a bookmark on the page before shutting the diary.
'Apni... list dikhao', he whispered, knowing very well he is going to get the same reply from her.
'No...Kyu dikhau? Pehle apni list dikhao'...she pouted.
Sarlaji began to clap at that moment and smiled warmly at everyone in general. If you have been able to do this, you've taken the first step towards achieving the common objective of this meeting'.
'I didn't mean to surprise you like this Mr. Kapadia, but this is me', she declared nonchalantly.
'I am glad you participated. I just hope you will work very hard to fulfil the list you just made and equally hard to execute our contract. Please send in the relevant documents, I will sign and send it back. My team will stay connected with yours.'
Ecstatic Anuj bowed his head in gratitude.
Addressing Anupama next, 'You my darling, it's, been such a pleasure knowing you. It gives me immense pride in seeing woman do wonders not just as a homemaker, which is the most difficult job in my opinion but also doing wonders in this outside world.
'Also I am sorry about the mistake in the beginning. I didn't mean...'
'...please don't apologise', Anu stopped her. 'I didn't mind that. It wasn't intentional so...it's all good. ', she smiled.
'It's been a great session, in fact this really helped to introspect, with time we ignore things that are truly dear to us and that make us happy, its time we embrace them. At least I got to learn about myself again.'
Anuj stood there lost in her as usual. She did this to him every time. Take him to another world where it was just her and him. It all seemed unrealistic, his Anu with him after all these years. In the same space. One of the things that he never wrote in any lists anywhere but it sure made him happy.
'Jai shri Krishna', Anu greeted finally with folded hands to everyone and casually her hand reached Anuj 's elbow and tugging at it she said, 'Chalein?
Anuj's eyes darted quickly from her hold on his elbow to her eyes.
'Yes, yes...' he robotically held the door open letting her go out first and followed her.
To be continued...
