kabhii kahaa na kisii se tere fasaane ko
na jaane kaise Khabar ho ga_ii zamaane ko

Fasaana: Fable, Fictional Tale, Romance, Story, Tale
Khabar: Account, Awareness, Information, Knowledge, News, Notice, Report, Rumor, Watchfulness

chaman me.n barq nahii.n chho.Datii kisii suurat
tarah tarah se banaataa huu.N aashiyaane ko

Chaman: Flower Garden, Flower Bed, A Blooming or Flourishing Place
Barq: Lightning
Aashiyaana: Nest

sunaa hai Gair kii mehfil me.n tum na jaaoge
kaho to aaj sajaa luu.N Ghariib-Khaane ko

Gair: Rival, Stranger
Mehfil: Assembly, Gathering, Party
Ghariib-Khaana: Abode of the poor/destitute

duaa bahaar kii maa.Ngii to itane phuul khile
kahii.n jagah na milii mere aashiyaane ko

Duaa: Blessing, Prayer, Wish
Bahaar: Bloom, Beauty, Prime, Spring
Jagah: About, Accommodation Locality, Locus, Room, Yield'

chaman me.n jaanaa to sayyaad dekh kar jaanaa
akelaa chho.D kar aayaa huu.N aashiyaane ko

Sayyaad: Hunter

merii lahad pe pata.ngo.n kaa Khuu.N hotaa hai
huzuur shammaa na laayaa kare.n jalaane ko

Lahad: Tomb, Grave
Patang: Kite
Shammaa: Lamp, Candle

dabaa ke qabr mein sab chal diye duaa na salaam
zaraa sii der me.n kyaa ho gayaa zamaane ko

Dabaana: Oppress, Quell, Quench
Qabr: Grave, Tomb

ab aage is me.n tumhaaraa bhii naam aayegaa
jo hukm ho to yahii.n chho.D duu.N fasaane ko

Hukm: Bidding, Decree, Law, Order, Ordinance, Statute

'Qamar' zaraa bhii nahii.n tujhako Khauf-e-rusavaa_ii
chale ho chaa.Ndanii shab me.n u.nhe.n manaane ko

Qamar: A reference to the poet, Qamar Jalabadi
Zaraa: A Few, A Little, Just, Trifle,Wee, Whit
Khauf: Awe, Fear, Jeopardy, Jitters, Threat

Thanks so much,amukta,for this beautiful Ghazal.One of my favourite Ghulam Ali Ghazals.Seems this is the version he sang in his younger days.

Sibalji I am no teacher and I dont even no urudu. I just got this on google and I thought I must share this with all of you as lot of us do not know urudu meanings to understand the song completley and enjoy it.I will certainly post some songs.

Thanks Amukta - I was just conveying my sincere appreciation for the effort. I always feel I missed something not learning Urdu and Bengali.
When I go to India I buy a lot of translations of old urdu classic poetry which is just OK and does not capture the essence. ( KC Nanda )


Thanks Indeed - Purpose is to learn the meaning of lovely words in Ghazals and that was served in these two songs.
Aligarh University has a site with lots of Ghazals but not much in meaning but still worth a visit on lie.
