Programming a musical high

The drive to be a playback singer took her to Jaipur where she auditioned for Star Voice of India. The rest is history. Born and brought up in Mumbai, Sumitra started learning Carnatic music while she was studying Chemistry at KJ Somaih College followed by a masters degree in Computer Applications.
Winning the 12th Hridayanath Mangeshkar Young Talent Award marked a golden start to her career as a singer. Concerts in Delhi, Pune, Jabalpur and Mumbai with Sonu Nigam as part of Idea Rocks India followed. But that did not suffice her hunger for success. "I was doing live shows on a part-time basis but I needed a platform to boost my career graph. That's when I decided to move to television," she says.
Participating in a talent hunt contest was the best option for her and she did have plenty of good options to choose from as three big channels were launching their respective versions of singing talent hunts. What made her participate in Voice of India? "Television is the best way to make an impact. I want everyone to appreciate my voice. And Voice of India is the best platform since it is Gajendra Singh's brainchild who has been associated with music for years," she says.
Like many other sailors in this boat, Sumitra too, has had her journey of hardship and heartbreak. But that has not deterred her determination. She has managed to clear seven rounds of auditions in various cities and has reached the last eight from her group. Ask her about strategy and pat comes the reply: "I try to sing songs of different singers and different genres everytime. The experience of doing stage shows has helped me build confidence."
And it's not just about the right approach. Sumitra has the best of techniques in her kitty as well. "I practice breathing exercises and yoga everyday. Also, I watch the video of the song before preparing it instead of just listening to it," she adds.
No wonder she has been praised for singing the songs of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle and Usha Uthup whose voice "I love." And what if she wins the contest? "I would love to come out with my album - a mix of western and classical music. However, I don't want to discontinue my journey midway like other winners of reality shows. I will work towards carving a niche in the industry," she says.
As for her mother profession - that of programming on the chips, she says her parents never wanted her to quit so she did not. But a long leave, she hopes, will turn into a new career which she loves more. source:http://www.dailypioneer.com/foray1.asp?main_variable= SUNDAYPIONEER%2FFORAY&file_name=fory3%2Etxt&counter_ img=3 |
