Chapter 2 Chandni Raatein
Amit was changing into his night-clothes when something fell out of his pocket. He picked it up and looked at it closely and walked to the window with it. The charm intrigued him. "Chandni raat mein apne khayaalon mein khoyi ek nanhi pari..." he thought smiling. He walked back to his desk and retrieved his purple diary from the drawer and started writing.
"Chandni raat mein,
Apne Khayalon mein,
Khoyi ek nanhi Pari.
Taarein toh saath hain
Chaand ki baaraat hai,
Kaisi hai jaadugari!
Jaaoge tum kahaan, O Chaand
Leke apni baaraat.
Main bhi hoon akeli,
Na koi mere saath.
Thaam lo ab tum
Aakar mera haath.
Muskuraayi is Khayaal se Paree
Aur gungunaaye koi raagini.
Chehre par ye kaisa noor,
Hai damakti chandni!"
(pasted the English words as the Hindi font doesn't render here some reason😕)
Amit put down the pen and ran his fingers over the charm slowly and sat staring at it for a long time. He suddenly snapped out of his reverie and saw it was past midnight. He put away the charm bracelet and his diary in the drawer making a mental note to give the charm bracelet at the Lost and Found office tomorrow like Sanjay suggested.
"Shu chhe, Amit? Why were you up so late last night? I had gone to get some water from the kitchen around midnight and I saw some light was still on in your room." Falguni asked as soon as she saw Amit the next morning at breakfast.
"Kuch nahi, Mummy! I was just revising some notes from yesterday's financial accounting class." Amit quickly thought on his feet and responded lest someone probes further and discovers his best-kept secret. But in the morning rush, he forgot all about the mental note he made to himself last night.
"Amit, you will share your notes with me,na" Rohan unabashedly asked. Amit rolled his eyes but nodded at Rohan and as soon as Phalguni was out of earshot as she went to fetch something from the kitchen, he said in an annoyed whisper to Rohan, "Why do you bunk classes, Rohan? What is so important than you have to miss attending lectures? If that is not the point of attending college, what is?" "Chill, relax, hold it, bro!" Rohan put up his hands grinning and trying to stop Amit's tirade, "Being the college cultural secretary is no easy job, you know. There is the Freshers' Welcome
party this Friday. Sanjay must have told you. And now that the freshers' batch have joined, you know I have to go through the whole drill of auditions for them for this year's cultural fest. And why do I worry about taking notes when you are there, my man? I know you wont let me fail." "I wont coach you this time" Amit grumbled. "Oh, but you cant help it. I know I am your favorite bro!"
Rohan's confidence made Amit smile like always. "Ok, fine! Try to spend atleast half-a-day with me during the weekend so that we can go over what was covered this week, ok?" "Yes, sir!" Rohan mock-saluted smiling.
"Ammu, get up! College nahi jaana?" Varsha called out to her darling daughter, laying out breakfast for her children and husband. The lunchboxes were already packed and Varsha smiled with satisfaction. But the smile soon faltered as she saw her daughter approaching the breakfast table slowly with a small pout. "What happened, beta?" "Mumma...woh..." Ammu hesitated. "Arre, what is bothering my princess today?" Hemant questioned, walking in just then. "Papa, woh...I am very sorry. I lost the bracelet you and Mumma gifted me on my birthday. I even tried searching my backpack
but I didn't get it. It fell down somewhere in college. I am so sorry. I know the painstaking effort you put in to get that special-design charm." Varsha knew her daughter was not the most careful girl on earth and was about to give her a piece of her mind "Ammu, you should be careful with your things..." but she was cut off by Hemant,"It is ok, Ammu beta. It happens to even the best of us. Dont worry, you still have the matching chain,na?! I'll get another bracelet made for you for Diwali this time." Amita, though happy at his suggestion, was still feeling a bit guilty. "No, papa.No
need to get it remade. Its ok. As you said, I have the chain." Varsha softened at the thought that atleast her daughter was not being a complete brat. "Achha, ok. Now have your breakfast soon. Its your turn to pick up Preeti today, na?" "Oops, I forgot! Thanks, Mumma!" Amita gave her a hug and sat down to quickly finish her breakfast.
"Welcome to all the new joiners!" read the bright red banner tied on the Arch just below the college name. All the juniors were staring wide-eyed at the banners, festoons and decorations that seemed to cover every wall and pillar of the college. "Freshers' Welcome Party! @Quadrangle on Friday, September 7 starting 4 pm. Be there!" declared most of the banners. "Hey, you know, Atul was telling me that the staff purposefully leave early on the Freshers' Welcome Party day to let the seniors and juniors... break the ice" Amita air-quoted the last three words with her fingers and rolled her eyes. Aarti spoke up,"Oho! You girls are simply worried. Some staff do stick around discreetly so that things dont turn serious. And even seniors are forewarned to not overstep the limit. Why will they risk rustication, yaar? And be positive! Imagine it as a chance to know our seniors. Nothing will happen. Dont take mild ragging to heart." "Since Himanshu's friends know his girlfriend is in college this year, you know they actually forbade him from coming to the ragging session. He has been assigned to monitor the refreshments stand on purpose!" Jigna said irritatedly. She had really hoped her boyfriend would be by her side and she would not have to face any teasing."That's true!"Amita nodded,"Atul also said he is not going to come to defend us and is going to stay out of the way when I tried asked him will he be around to help." "Jo bhi ho, the decorations are simply beautiful! Makes us feel so special, na?" Preeti smiled looking around and everyone had to agree. The festive mood in the college this week would cheer up even the most serious student or staff.
But they barely affected one calm, cool, collected guy for whom college was all about serious studies and academic activities.
So, how was it? After seeing the romantic hubby, Amit Shah, I always felt he should have a secret romantic side. And so, I added the shaayaraana andaaz. Hope you liked it. I tried to post the poem in Hindi but IF doesn't allow the font. Do let me know your feedback, dears. It means a lot to me. I know this chapter is shorterand there was no A2 interaction but bear with me. haule, haule ho jaayega...
Have a wonderful weekend, dears and keep the feedback coming 😉
