English Translation

A poem dedicated to my Mom!

Badi pyaari ek ladki thhi,

There was lovely girl

Jo sabke dil par chaayi thhi,

Who lived in the hearts of all

Rang thha gora ,aankh thhe kaale,

She was fair skinned - with dark black eyes

Sabse choti – aur dulaari thhi.

Youngest and the most pampered.

Beet gaya bachpan uska,

Her childhood was spent in

Khelne, koodne, gaane mein,

playing, having fun and singing,

Aayi jawaani milna thha use

Then came her youth when she had to meet

Apne dil ke rajkumar se.

Her Prince - her King of hearts!

Thha woh itna honhaar ki

He was so brilliant and accomplished

Lagti thhi use khud mein kami

She felt she was not up to the mark

Par pyar thha unme beshumaar ki

But they had so much of love for each other

Na aayi kabhi unmein doori.

Never did it make them feel apart

Phir hua aisa ek haadsa,

Then they had to witness an accident,

Jisne unki duniya ko hila diya

Which rocked their world around

Us ladki ke raja ne par

But that girl's Prince and King

Hausala apna nahi haara.

Never lost hope and faith in himself.

Aaj bhi woh apne bachchon ko,

Even today she tells her children

Apni beeti baaten sunaati hain,

The stories of her struggles

Kabhi na haaro – chalte jaao,

Never give up - keep moving on

Yahi seekh sikhaati hain..

Is the motto that she teaches.

Naaz hai unko apne raja par,

She is proud of her King

Jo haar ke sab – phir se ubhraa,

Who lost a lot - but rose once again

Apni rani aur bacchon par

On his queen and children

Jisne khushiyaan hi barsaaya.

He showered only happiness

(written by me for my Mom and Dad! )

Let me try to make this thread lighter - everyone is getting emotional...I think...

The second Woman as I said is -

My Sister -

Full of life - bubbly - fun loving -

One who knows all about me - my secrets - my first crush - my moods -

First girl from our family to leave India for higher studies -

First Woman Doctorate in our family -

Professor in an American University -

Great host of all the shows of her husband -

Music loving and a fitness freak like me -

Mom of three girls(!!!!!!) - but still enthusiastic enough to take part for the third time in the Philadelphia Half Marathon (reminded of this as we have one on Sunday in Mumbai too - celebrating Women's week! I think Mitali was there last year...to support the cause....)

My guide - advisor - and one whom I can call at any time of the day/night for anything...

Loves reading my posts on IF and wants to join too ...to motivate me!

We truly have some amazing women around us to keep us going and of course as I always have said -

Hats off to the men in their lives who support and motivate them to pursue their dreams -

like our Pintu and Krishna of this show!

I'm doing about a great woman from S.A.
Manto Tshabalala-Msimang
Tshabalala-Msimang was born on October 9 1940 in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. She matriculated from Inanda Seminary, and went on to earn a BA degree from the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape, graduating in 1961.

In 1962, shortly after the African National Congress was banned, Tshabalala-Msimang was one of a group of 27 young members of the organisation ordered to go into exile by the ANC leadership. She
remained abroad for 28 years.

She went to the then Union of Soviet Socialist Republic, where she enrolled at the First Leningrad Medical Institute. She graduated from that institution with a medical degree in 1969.

Tshabalala-Msimang later moved to Tanzania, where in 1972 she completed a diploma in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Dar es Salaam. One legacy of her time spent in these two countries was an ability to speak fluent Russian and Swahili.

Tshabalala-Msimang went on to work in health services in Tanzania and Botswana. She returned to South Africa in 1990, and at first worked in community health organisations in KwaZulu-Natal. She was first elected to Parliament in 1994.

She served as chair of the National Assembly's health committee, and on July 1 1996, was appointed deputy justice minister. She was appointed minister of health in Mbeki's administration on June 17 1999.

She was married to ANC veteran Mendi Msimang. She has two
daughters, Zuki and Pulane
