Part 22: Valentine's Day for our other couple
Manthan took Nisha's hand and pulled her into the kitchen. He had been trying to get to talk to her for an hour now. But he hadn't been able to because of the amount of work people kept piling on her. First, Tulsi dadi gave her some pastries to take care of in the kitchen. Then, Tanya gave her some clothes to give to Bhoomi. Next, Damini gave her the guest list to check how many people had come. Now she was finally free from all her work and Manthan was not going to lose this opportunity.
N: Manthan? Aap kya kar rahe ho?
M: You said your answer was yes, so I'm going to take you out today.
N: But there's so much work to do around here! I can't leave…Maybe tomorrow, Manthan, ok?
M: But today's special! Come on, Nisha, please!
Out of the blue, Manthan's friends came into the kitchen talking loudly and with beer and coke. On of the boys, Rajesh, saw Manthan and gave him a high five.
R: Arre, Manthan, what are you doing here? Come on the real party is at your pool! Everyone from college is there! Come on! Oh, Nisha, hi…you can come to, I guess
Rajesh snikered quietly at the back to his friends and muttered, "Dressed like that?" She looked down at her clothes and realized she was completely out of place from this high class party. She was wearing her usual salwar kameez while every other girl was wearing a high skirt or some fancy dress. Manthan, who didn't hear the rude comment that Rajesh had passed, refused the party at the pool.
R: Come on, man! It's Valentine's Day! Every girl is looking for you out there!
M: Yea well, I'm going out with Nisha today so tough luck…
N: No, Manthan, I really can't, it's ok. You go to the party…
M: I won't go if you won't go, Nisha.
R: Ok then, Nisha, you can come too; meet us at the pool when you've – umm – changed.
After saying that, Rajesh dragged Manthan out of the kitchen. Nisha went up to Archita's room to change into a better salwar kameez. She looked out Archita's window and saw the party at the poolside. Everyone was in the pool and the girls were all wearing skirts and dresses. So this is Manthan's life, she thought to herself. Well, if he can do all this for me, then I should be able to fit into his class. She looked around the room and saw the mess that her sister had made. She took Isha's black dress and wore it with Isha's black stilettos. She looked in the mirror and was shocked to see herself look exactly like Isha. But somehow she wasn't that comfortable with the high heels and the high skirt. She had never worn these kinds of clothes before and she almost wanted to change but then she chanted, "It's for Manthan. It's for Manthan. It's for Manthan…" in her head and decided to do this for Manthan. If he was being this nice to her, she should try to fit in his group and not embarrass him by her salwar kameez.
She walked down the stairs and was having trouble balancing on the high heels and kept pulling her skirt down ashamed that she was wearing such a low skirt. When she got to the poolside she immediately looked around for Manthan but didn't find him anywhere. Suddenly, Rajesh and his gang of friends came beside and wolf-whistled. She looked and them and pulled her skirt down even lower.
R: Wow, Nisha, gotta say you look hot! Come on, let's dance, girl!
N: Uhh – Thanks, Aap ne Manthan ko kahi dehka hai?
R: Why do care? He's probably with some other girl right now, come let's dance
Rajesh forced Nisha to put her arms around him, despite Nisha's refusal. Even when Nisha tried to break away from him, he was too strong for her. He suddenly grabbed her by the waist and lifted her up. She felt so sick, nothing like when Manthan lifted her up.
R: Come on, Nisha, dance!
Rajesh eventually got angry at the fact that she wasn't dancing with him and he looked like an utter fool. He lifted her up and threw her into the pool as hard as he could, swearing at her while doing so.
For a minute, Manthan didn't know what had happened; he was waiting for Nisha when suddenly he had heard a huge splash in the pool. He saw a girl wearing a black dress in the pool trying to cover herself with her arms while everyone was laughing at her. At first he thought it was Isha but quickly realized it was Nisha. Anger was boiling inside him and he went by Rajesh and his gang to get a closer look at what had happened. When he came near the pool, somebody told him that Rajesh had been the cause of all this and now Rajesh was swearing at Nisha. Manthan was really angry now.
M: RAJESH!
He made a fist and lifted his arm to hurt Rajesh in every way possible.
He stopped as he heard silent, solemn sobs. He looked at Nisha; she was crying uncontrollably. Manthan took off his shirt and dived into the pool. He gave Nisha his shirt to cover herself up and he carried her out of the pool like a child. Nobody was laughing anymore. The only sounds that could be heard were Nisha quiet weeping noises. Manthan put Nisha down and took her into the rose garden behind Shantineketan. If Nisha needed anything other than warm clothes right now, it was a good friend and Manthan would do his part by being her friend.
