Chapter 14:

"Damn it!" Rajveer muttered angrily as he found himself sitting with nothing to do for his case. Colonel Shakti left for a meeting with his superiors early in the morning, sympathizing and then telling him that he should try to adjust with paperwork. Nandini had left last night when there was a call from the judge about his case. He put his head on his hands, still wondering if he could sneak out somehow… no; that would be too risky.

The phone rang, and Rajveer eagerly answered it.

"Raj? I've got the permission to get your help on the case, as long as you're within my view and don't interact with any suspects… so come over to the…" Nandini gave him the directions, and Rajveer left at once. They met at a small abandoned sort of place at the outskirts of Delhi.

"What are we doing here?" he asked.

"Nitin opened up a bit yesterday… he said that all the information that's exchanged between them and the boss takes place here."

"Did he say if anything is happening today? If not, we'll search the entire place…"

"He said that everyday at 3:00 PM and 3:00 AM someone comes here to give them all the latest updates on their missions or to take information to the boss from them. It's 1:30 now, so we have time to search most of the places. Come on." She was about to move forward when Rajveer pulled her back behind a small broken hut, signing to stay put and be quiet.

"-and GP both were caught. They even discharged RSS till his trial! He and that woman, NV, are working on his case now. X ordered you to stay under for some while; RSS is no simple Officer. He caught AH at KMA even after all our work, remember? So tell everyone not to contact each other or X, and the mission is on hold now. X has plans for the trial. Now go!" said the Lieutenant, who was currently working under Colonel Shakti at the Delhi Headquarter.

Nandini signed saying that they should catch them now, but Rajveer shook his head and quietly moved to behind a tree nearby, following the Lieutenant. He called Nandini with his hand, and thus began the game of cat and mouse.

"Wow… that was a long day!" Nandini said in a tired voice as she slumped back on the couch back at the Delhi Headquarter. They had followed Lieutenant Dey the entire afternoon and were discovered by noon, making the chase not as simple as they expected.

*Flashback*
… Losing track of Dey's car in the Delhi traffic…
… Running from shops to corner alleys…
… A group of college girls losing their hearts to Rajveer…
… Avoiding the girls while looking for Dey…
… Finally catching him at the corner of a salon…
*End of Flashback*

"Though you have to admit, it was too hilarious when we caught him!" she told him. He just made a face, remembering how Dey had nearly jumped on them and was had clung on to Rajveer's leg like his life depended on it. It had taken his skills at combat to free his leg! "Oh hey, I'll be back in a few minutes…" she said and got up, taking her bag. She came back after a while with her phone in hand, mouthing 'it's for you'. He took the phone uncertainly.

"Hello?" the voice at the other end said at the same time as him. There was almost pin-drop silence for a long while. He turned to see Nandini, but found that he was alone in the room.

"Naina…"

"Sir…" They spoke together again, both letting out a laugh. A part of the tension seemed to drain away with their laughter.

"So Cadet Singh… how is everything back there?"

"Fine, Sir. Preparations for the Ball are almost ready… are you coming?" He felt guilty for not asking about her; he had wanted to, but didn't know how.

"If I'm not thrown to jail or sentenced to death that afternoon, why not?"

"Your trial is…?" she left off.

"Yes Naina, my trial is on the day of the Ball. What a coincident, no? But that doesn't mean you guys shouldn't continue with… you know what… got it?"

"Yes Sir! And I'm sure that they'll clear you of all charges, and you'll be able to come to the Ball." She mentally slapped herself for saying the last bit; she almost let slip how badly she wanted him to come!

"Thank you Cadet Singh. So… any ideas for dates to the Ball?"

"Sir?! Oh, umm… ye – no!" How could she tell him that she wanted to go with him and only him! Huda had asked her already, no doubt, but he was understanding (which was quite odd) when she rejected, and got a senior cadet to go with him.

"Oh come on Cadet, won't you tell your mentor who it is? Perhaps Cadet Huda?" he asked in a teasing tone hoping he didn't sound wistful.

"No! I mean… it's not Huda… actually… umm… I was just joking Sir!" she knew she wasn't convincing, but a thought entered her mind. Why not tell him the truth? After all, there was no point in hiding it. Her heartbeat increased at the thought of this night being the night he would know about… no, she couldn't!

"Hello? Naina?" he knew she was hiding something, but he couldn't get his hopes up. Whatever it was though, he would obtain it from her. "So, you were saying? I'm sure there's no harm in telling me the name, Naina! And call me Raj, 'Sir' sounds to formal when I'm not your teacher anymore."

"Raj…"

"Hmm?"

"Naam keh diya…" she said softly, wondering if her life would change for the better or worse after this. Either she would gain her love or she'd lose her mentor and friend. The silence from him was killing her, and before either could say anything, an orderly came and hung up the phone, saying the lights would be out in a minute.

That was a defining moment for the relationship that would blossom in the near future. The two people who would share the relationship went to bed that night with the same insecurities and thought only about each other. Even though they were troubled with these uncertainties, you could see them deep in slumber with a soft smile playing on their lips, as they drowned in the ocean of probabilities.
