Actor Saif Ali Khan is a candid speaker and never misses an opportunity to raise his voice. Recently, the actor said that he does not believe in Indian award shows and how the functions are no longer a celebration of art. He also recalled his own experience when he was downgraded at one such event.
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Saif admitted that many people felt he was undeserving of his National Film Award, which he won for Hum Tum, but hopes that over the years, he has proven his talents.
He said: “Yes, I was seen to be undeserving of the few awards that I received earlier in my career, including the National award for Hum Tum. But I think over the years I’ve proven myself to be more worthy of recognition.”
Further, Saif added that the 'commercial aspect' attached to award shows has now turned it into a "whole big tamasha".
The actor also went on to recall his own experience where he was promised an award but was downgraded at the end moment. "Some years ago I was called for an awards function. When I got there someone higher up in the organization told me, 'We wanted to give you the Best Actor award. But you know how it is. We’ll give you the award for Best Actor in a comic role', he shared.
Saif thinks that now award shows are an excuse for making money. "As I see them, awards functions are an excuse to make some money by performing on stage. If you have the intelligence, then you spend the money well. That’s what awards are worth as far as I can see. It’s not about pretending to be an art of a community" he concluded.
On the work front, Said Ali Khan will be next seen in I'm Raut's highly anticipated period drama Adipurush.
