A few days ago, filmmaker Guneet Monga’s Pagglait had a direct to digital release starring Sanya Malhotra in the lead role. The comic tragedy film is a light hearted take on death, also featuring an ensemble cast of Shruti Sharma, Sayani Gupta, Raghubir Yadav, Ashutosh Rana, Sheebha Chadha, Jameel Khan, Rajesh Tailang among others.
The film opened to good reviews from the critics and the audience, who also seemed to love the amusing script. However, the makers of another film titled ‘Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi’ have accused the Pagglait team of plagiarism.
Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi released in theatres on January 1, 2021 and also had its premiere at the Jio MAMI 21st Mumbai Film Festival in October 2019, a month before Pagglait went on floors. Directed by actor Seema Pahwa, tut film tells a similar story of a sudden death resulting in a family’s reunion and also a lot of chaos and madness.
As per reports, Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi’s team is extremely angry after watching the Sanya Malhotra starrer, and have accused the team of plagiarism. A close source to the team told Bollywood Hungama,
https://www.instagram.com/p/CI-Fp1yJj4J/?igshid=kqptwppxfi4d“They couldn’t believe that the film is so similar in so many ways to Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi. From the location to the character traits to even camera angles, so many things seem to be copied is what they allege.”
Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi stars Naseeruddin Shah, Supriya Pathak, Konkona Sen Sharma, Parambrata Chatterjee, Vikrant Massey, Vinay Pathak, Manoj Pahwa, among others.
When the director of the film, Seema Pahwa was asked to comment on the same, she told the portal that the team members are disturbed over these developments. She also adds,
“However, ours was an original film and so is Pagglait. I would not say that they copied our film. I guess it must be a coincidence. However, some things were in their control. They were aware of Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi and yet, they ignored the similarities. They could have tweaked the script a little. They had the time and opportunity. They have even shot their film in the same house where we shot Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi!”
Seema also adds that she has not watched Pagglait yet but received calls from friends and unit members about the similarities between the two films.
Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi is all set to release on Netflix on March 31, 2021.
