'My way of trying to commit suicide': Neha Bhasin reveals consuming half bottle of fat burners at age of 20

Singer Neha Bhasin recently appeared on Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa’s podcast, Bharti TV, where she revisited some of the early experiences from her music career. Known today for her independent work and playback singing, Bhasin began her journey in the public eye as part of India’s first all-girl pop group, Viva. The group, formed in 2002 through the music reality show Coke [V] Popstars, included Seema Ramchandani, Pratichee Mohapatra, Mahua Kamat, Anushka Manchanda, and Bhasin herself.

During the conversation, Neha recalled the early pressures that came with sudden fame. She spoke about the intense scrutiny the group faced, not just in terms of performance but also physical appearance. In 2003, a year after the group’s debut, Bhasin was put on fat burners despite weighing only 50 kilograms. At the time, she said she did not fully understand what the supplements were or the impact they could have on her health.

She went on to describe an incident involving a conflict with the television channel that had signed Viva. According to Bhasin, she had requested a meeting with the head of the channel following a disagreement. During that meeting, another senior man from the network joined in and, she says, subjected her to personal comments and body-shaming.

"Conference room mein jaise ek bada TV hota hai, usne us TV par video daal diya aur mere pet par circle karte hue bola, 'See, you are so fat. Because of which, we can’t release the video.' I was 50 kg at that time. I remember, I went home aur gusse mein aadhi se zyada bottle fat burners ki kha li thi. That was my way of trying to commit suicide and for two days, I was throwing up, the band did not know what has happened."

On the professional front, Neha Bhasin continues to focus on independent music. She recently released the track Zinda Hoon Main, which explores personal freedom and resilience. Known for blending Indian folk with contemporary styles, Bhasin has built a distinct space for herself outside mainstream playback. She also remains active in live performances and digital music platforms, where she frequently shares original compositions and collaborations.
