Director Karthik Subbaraj recently opened up about his experience working on Kiara Advani and Ram Charan’s much-talked-about film Game Changer. In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Karthik shared how the original story he wrote was changed completely during the film’s making. Despite calling the film entertaining earlier, Karthik has now claimed that the screenplay was heavily altered after multiple writers got involved.
Karthik had initially given the film’s story to director S. Shankar with a lot of excitement. He recalled, “I gave an outline of the story—a one-liner. What I had shared was about a very grounded IAS officer who becomes a politician. When I gave the story to Shankar sir, I was so excited to see how he would make it bigger. So that was the world introduced by me. However, it eventually turned into a whole different world.”
The filmmaker further explained that too many changes were made later on. He said, “There were a lot of people, a lot of writers involved. The screenplay has been changed a lot. The story has also changed a little bit. But you can never define a phenomenon that will work for films. No one can say why this film didn’t connect with the audience.”
Game Changer, which had a big star cast including Ram Charan and Kiara Advani, failed to leave an impact at the box office. It received mixed reviews and couldn't live up to the expectations. It ended up becoming the second major flop for director Shankar after Indian 2, despite collecting Rs 186.28 crore worldwide.
Interestingly, after the film’s release, Karthik had posted a positive note on social media. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Game Changer was super entertaining with vintage Shankar sir’s grand mass action vibes and political punches. Thank you, Shankar sir, for letting me be a little part of your big vision.”
Currently, Karthik Subbaraj is busy with his next project, Retro. This Tamil-language romantic action film stars Suriya and Pooja Hegde. With music by Santhosh Narayanan and cinematography by Shreyaas Krishna, Retro is scheduled to hit theatres on 1st May.
