Karan Johar Says SS Rajamouli’s Films Defy Logic but Win with Conviction

Karan Johar recently shared his views on storytelling, stating that conviction is more important than logic in filmmaking. The renowned director-producer believes that when a filmmaker has complete confidence in their vision, audiences will accept even the most unrealistic scenes. He supported his argument by referencing the works of SS Rajamouli, Sandeep Reddy Vanga, and Anil Sharma.

In a conversation with Komal Nahta, Karan explained that conviction plays a bigger role in filmmaking than logic. He said that the biggest directors and their blockbusters succeed because of strong belief in their storytelling. According to him, logic takes a backseat when conviction drives the narrative.

Karan took Rajamouli as an example, pointing out how his movies are not bound by logic but still engage audiences with powerful storytelling. “Take Rajamouli sir’s movies, for instance. Where can you spot logic?” Karan remarked. He added that Rajamouli’s conviction makes audiences believe in whatever he presents on screen. “This applies to all major blockbusters, including Animal, RRR, and Gadar,” he noted.

To further prove his point, Karan mentioned Gadar and its iconic action sequences. He explained that a person single-handedly taking down 1,000 enemies using a handpump is not logical, but director Anil Sharma’s confidence in Sunny Deol’s character made it believable. According to him, the director’s strong conviction made audiences accept such exaggerated scenes without question.

Karan emphasized that conviction is the key ingredient in filmmaking. He stated that self-doubt, overthinking audience expectations, and focusing too much on logic can stop a film from becoming a blockbuster. In his opinion, filmmakers who fully believe in their vision are the ones who achieve massive success at the box office.
