Hum Tum: Hrithik Roshan's confusion, Aamir's divorce with Reena Dutta - here's how Saif came on board

Hum Tum, one of the underrated movies of 2004 ruled over the box office, and went onto become a cult movie. Saif Ali Khan’s career as a leading man was cemented after Hum Tum. But he was not the first choice for the movie. Before Saif, Kunal Kohli had offered the film to three other big actors. He revealed this to Radio Nasha in a candid interview. It seems Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Vivek Oberoi rejected the movie.

It seems Kunal Kohli had first taken the script to Hrithik Roshan. They had worked together in Mujhse Shaadi Karoge!. He told Kohli that the script of Hum Tum was beautiful but he wasn’t sure if he could pull it off. He told Kohli that he was not in the right frame of mind. He wanted to have a hit behind him before he signed Hum Tum. He told Kohli, “I know some of my upcoming films are going to flop. I’m just in a bad phase.’ He was very confused. We could see he wasn’t making excuses—he simply didn’t feel confident enough. He wanted a hit film behind him before taking this on.”

After Hrithik Roshan rejected the movie, Kohli went to Aamir Khan. It seems he was going through a breakup and divorce from his first wife, Reena Dutta. He told Kunal Kohli that he was not in the right frame of mind to even hear the script. Then, Vivek Oberoi heard the script and gave them the dates. Then, he cancelled the dates and wanted some changes to the script. Kunal Kohli and the makers decided not to pursue him.

Finally, Kunal Kohli said, “Then Adi (Aditya Chopra) asked me, ‘Why don’t you think about Saif?’ I imagined him in every frame of the film and thought he’d be fantastic. The rest is history.”
