Filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi make a revealation: People thought Andaz Apna Apna would be a love story

Director Rajkumar Santoshi recently shared his thoughts on his cult classic Andaz Apna Apna and teased the possibility of a new comedy film. The iconic 1994 film, which starred Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, and Karisma Kapoor, is widely regarded as a comedic gem, despite its initial lackluster reception. Santoshi hinted at a new project, currently titled Adaa Apni Apni, that he’s working on in a similar comedic style, though he stopped short of confirming whether it would be a direct sequel to Andaz Apna Apna.

Speaking to Doordarshan, Santoshi addressed the misconception that Andaz Apna Apna flopped upon release. He explained, "They just say that it flopped after release. People were just not aware of it. The publicity wasn't done in a proper way and people were not aware that this was a comedy."

He continued, "People thought this would be a love story like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak or Dil or Maine Pyar Kiya. The distributors were new, so they didn't release it properly. At the time of the release, Aamir, Salman and me, the three of us were not in the city, so there was no premiere or anything. So maybe because of that, the film didn't get a strong response upon release. People who watched it, they were loving it."

Santoshi further elaborated, "I wouldn't use harsh words like it was a flop, it wasn't a flop. It didn't get the kind of response that we expected. Later, people started liking it. It grew by word-of-mouth and, as it was growing with publicity, it was taken off the theatres because the distributors didn't have faith in it. They thought it wouldn't work," he said.

The director then revealed his plans for a new comedy similar to Andaz Apna Apna. "I am writing a comedy in Andaz Apna Apna's style. This is the kind of experiment that you have to do, you don't always know how it will turn out but I can assure that it will be entertaining," Santoshi said. He added that the working title of the new film is Adaa Apni Apni. When asked if it would be a sequel to Andaz Apna Apna, he replied, "Too early to say. Let's see."

Rajkumar Santoshi, known for directing blockbusters like Damini, Khakee, and The Legend of Bhagat Singh, continues to be a prominent figure in the Indian film industry. Fans are eagerly awaiting his next project, with many hoping that Adaa Apni Apni will live up to the legacy of his earlier comedic masterpiece.
