Grammy-nominated music composer and vocalist Loire Cotler, renowned for her unique style of vocal rhythmic play, has crafted the track Call to Life for the upcoming film Fateh. Speaking about her collaboration with actor-director Sonu Sood, Loire commended his exceptional ability to communicate both spoken and unspoken directions, which she said stimulated her musical creativity.
Loire told IANS, “The creative collaboration begins with spoken direction and unspoken direction. The outer meaning and the inner meaning of the scene. Sonu has a special gift in communicating these two different layers in a way that stimulated my musical creativity.”
Fateh marks Sonu Sood’s directorial debut. Recalling how the collaboration came to fruition, Loire shared that Sonu had discovered her work after hearing legendary composer Hans Zimmer mention her in an interview.
She said, “I was delighted to accept this opportunity. I have always had a passion for vocal rhythmic play. I discovered that the term Rhythm Vocalist best describes my hybridisation of vocal techniques. There are several main components to this style, including jazz scat, Konnakol (drum language from South India), as well as drum vocalizations, overtone singing and wordless traditions from around the globe.”
Describing her creative process, Loire added, “My vocal expressions are energized by the rhythmic power of the voice, and the result is like an interdimensional language that seeks to touch that part of one’s heart that may remain hidden on an ordinary day.”
Loire has an enduring association with Hans Zimmer, the legendary composer behind scores for films like The Batman trilogy, Interstellar, and Dunkirk. She considers him a significant influence in her artistic journey.
“I consider Hans a very important mentor in my evolution as a musician and composer, as well as a beloved guide and friend on my personal journey. It is truly one of the greatest honors and blessings to know him and be part of his musical family,” she shared, adding, “There really are no words adequate enough to describe how special Hans is to me.”
On how working on Fateh deepened her understanding of Indian culture and music, Loire explained, “My creative role in this project was very specifically attuned to the emotion and energy on specific cues.” She further noted, “Working on Fateh amplified how awesome the universal language of music can be in elevating the cinematic experience.”
Produced by Sonali Sood under Shakti Sagar Productions, along with Umesh KR Bansal of Zee Studios, and co-produced by Ajay Dhama, Fateh is set to release in cinemas on January 10, 2025.
