Kangana Ranaut’s political drama Emergency hit the screens today, but it had a rather underwhelming start at the box office. Despite the special Cinema Lovers Day promotion, which slashed ticket prices to Rs 99 across the country, the film only managed to earn Rs 2.25 crore on its opening day. This opening, though not disappointing, falls short of expectations for a film of this scale.
The film, produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, tells the story of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the events surrounding the 1975 Emergency. While the film’s subject matter is gripping, Emergency did not attract a massive crowd on Day 1. This could be due to various factors, including competition from other films and the mixed reactions it received from early viewers.
The real test for Emergency will be tomorrow when the ticket prices return to normal rates. Although the opening numbers aren’t stellar, there is still hope for the film. If it gains traction over the weekend and sees a steady rise in ticket sales, it may still have a chance at success. However, it will need to hold strong in the coming weeks, especially with new releases expected to hit the theaters soon.
Critics and audiences have had varied responses to the film. While Kangana has been lauded for her portrayal of Indira Gandhi, her direction has been met with mixed reviews. Some feel that the film lacks the depth required for such a historical subject, while others believe that it could have been more engaging. This mixed reception could impact its box office performance moving forward.
Looking ahead, the movie will face stiff competition from upcoming releases. Sky Force, starring Akshay Kumar and Veer Pahariya, is scheduled to release on January 24, and Deva starring Shahid Kapoor will join the race by the end of the month.
Emergency is now playing in theaters, and moviegoers can book their tickets online or at the cinema counters. Let’s see how the film performs in the coming days.
