The controversy surrounding Ranveer Singh’s performance at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India in Goa continues to generate strong reactions across the country. During the event he reenacted a moment inspired by the famous Chaundi sequence from Kantara Chapter 1, a portrayal deeply rooted in the sacred spirit worship traditions of the Tulu region. His reference to the Chamundi Daiva as a female ghost and his exaggerated mimicry on stage were widely viewed as insensitive and dismissive of a revered ritual. Many members of the Tulu and wider Hindu community expressed hurt, stating that the act trivialised a tradition that is considered sacred and spiritually significant.
Amid growing public criticism Ranveer Singh has now issued an apology. He addressed the matter through his Instagram stories where he wrote: 'My intention was to highlight Rishabh's incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration. I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I have hurt anyone's sentiments, I sincerely apologise.' His statement marks the first time he has commented directly on the incident which had quickly escalated after clips from the event circulated online.

The apology has sparked fresh discussion regarding the responsibilities of public figures when referencing cultural and spiritual practices. Many critics had pointed out that the rituals depicted in Kantara draw from centuries old traditions of spirit worship in coastal Karnataka where performers are believed to be in communion with divine energies. These rituals are conducted with devotion and care and are considered central to the identity of the Tulu speaking community.
While some social media users have welcomed the actor’s apology and urged the public to move forward others argue that the incident highlights a recurring problem in popular entertainment where sacred or culturally rooted practices are sometimes used casually without full understanding. Cultural experts have reiterated that respectful representation is essential especially when such traditions are connected to living communities who continue to practice them with sincerity. It now remains to be seen whether the actor’s statement will be accepted by those who felt hurt or whether the debate will continue in the days ahead.
