It’s a day to celebrate prominent Assamese actor Celesti Bairagey, as the Modi Cabinet has recognized Assamese as a classical language. She says she could never have imagined this.
"When I debuted in 'Niveer Aru Tara. It was special because it was in Assamese—it was my heart and home. I never imagined we'd see Assamese recognized as a classical language in my lifetime. It makes me want to celebrate all those small steps I took, because now it feels like something bigger for everyone from Assam!" she says.
She adds, “I started my journey with Assamese-language projects like 'Niveer Aru Tara,' and it's incredible to think that our language is getting this recognition now. It feels like all our little stories are being heard, and I hope it inspires more young people to dive deep into our beautiful language and keep its magic alive."
Ask her if she believes that this decision will impact the younger generation's interest in Assamese language and culture, and she says, “Doing short films and projects in Assamese taught me the beauty of our language, and now that it's officially classical, I can't wait to see Assamese being used in mainstream cinema or on OTT platforms! It would be so cool to see our culture and language reaching more people, and for others to fall in love with it just like we have.”
She adds, “Growing up in Assam, I always felt our language had this unique warmth. I've always been proud of my work in Assamese cinema, starting from my debut in the industry and then short films. But this recognition makes me want to do even more— It’s like a dream for all of us who want our culture to thrive. "
Talking about changes or advancements that she would you like to see in Assamese cinema and theater now that it is officially a classical language, she says, “Imagine our grandparents’ stories, our folk tales, getting more recognition and respect. This makes me want to work harder on Assamese projects and bring that raw beauty to the screen."
