Amid the nationwide lockdown, the Maharashtra Government had allowed the liquor stores to be open from May 04, Monday. After the announcement, a huge crowd of people lined up outside liquor stores, which turned into a frenzy amongst people. No guidelines of social distancing were followed and massive ruckus was created in various areas of the state.

Actor Arjun Rampal shared one such video showing the crowd of people pushing each other to buy alcohol and while the Police tried to control the situation, the officials were attacked by the mob too. In the video, many people can be seen without masks and no social distancing has been maintained as people are standing in close proximity to each other.

The actor strongly condemned the crowding of liquor stores and also asked the government to take serious action against those breaking the lockdown rules. Arjun shared a video on his social media and wrote:

“Please stop this. Outside liquor stores, as they have been opened. I urge the government to please stop this immediately. This is absolute chaos and there is no level of discipline being maintained or any kind of social distancing.”

He added, “These guys deserve a thrashing, not drinking.”

Arjun’s video received support from other celebrities like hairstylist Aalim Hakim, who wrote  “Seriously these people have no respect for their own body and others.. it is such a shame,” while chef Vicky Ratnani commented: “Biggest mistake. Shame and Sad.”

As a result of the massive crowd flouting the lockdown rules, the Mumbai BMC has withdrawn the relaxation and ordered to shut down liquor stores in Mumbai from May 06, Wednesday.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also warned citizens that if they fail to obey laws, liquor shops will be closed once again in the capital. “It was unfortunate that chaos was seen at some shops today in Delhi....If we come to know about violations of social distancing and other norms from any area, then we will have to seal the area and revoke the relaxations given there,” he said.
