Anurag Kashyap Blasts Film Bans; Says Government Can’t Handle Truth in Stories Like Punjab 95 and Phule

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has once again voiced his strong opinions against the censorship and blocking of films in India. In a bold and fiery Instagram story, Kashyap called out the government for allegedly stopping the release of films that address sensitive social and political issues. His post mentioned titles like Punjab 95, Tees, Dhadak 2, and Phule, expressing frustration over how such films are being silenced.

In his post, Kashyap wrote, “I don’t know how many other films are blocked that expose the agenda of this casteist, regionalist, racist government.” He didn’t hold back from directly calling out the authorities, stating that the government is too “ashamed” to face the truth reflected in these films. According to him, these films force the audience to see the uncomfortable realities of society—something the system reportedly wants to hide.

The filmmaker further added, “So ashamed that they can’t even openly talk about what is it about the film that bothers them. Fuckin’ cowards.” His anger seems rooted in the idea that cinema, especially the kind that holds a mirror to society, is being pushed aside to avoid public discussion on uncomfortable topics like caste, regional discrimination, and political biases.

Punjab 95, starring Diljit Dosanjh, has already been in the news for facing delays due to its political theme. Similarly, Phule is said to be based on the life of Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, social reformers who fought caste discrimination. Such films, Kashyap feels, are essential but are being targeted unfairly.

Kashyap has always been known for his unfiltered opinions and for using his voice to speak up against injustice in the film industry. He has previously clashed with censorship boards and has been critical of the shrinking space for free artistic expression in India.

With this post, Anurag Kashyap has once again sparked a debate about freedom of speech and the role of cinema in society. Many fans and fellow filmmakers have come out in support, applauding his courage to speak out. As the discussion grows louder, all eyes are now on whether these films will ever get the platform they deserve.
