Anurag Kashyap returns to direct 'Nishaanchi'; release date confirmed

Amazon MGM Studios has locked in a theatrical release date of September 19 for Nishaanchi, a crime drama directed by Anurag Kashyap. The film is being presented by Jar Pictures and Flip Films, with producers Ajay Rai and Ranjan Singh backing the project. Nishaanchi introduces Aaishvary Thackeray in his first lead role, alongside Vedika Pinto, Monika Panwar, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and Kumud Mishra.

Set against an urban landscape, the film tracks the story of two brothers navigating opposing trajectories. Their diverging choices form the foundation of the plot, which explores how individual decisions echo through family, relationships, and social systems. While one sibling is drawn toward responsibility, the other veers into a world of crime and consequences.

The project has been in development for several years. Kashyap began working on the script back in 2016, and spent considerable time looking for the right production house to support the story in its intended form. Amazon MGM came on board as the distributor and partner, allowing the director to realise the project without compromise.

Nishaanchi also marks a fresh step in Amazon MGM’s evolving approach to theatrical films in India. While the studio is known for its digital originals, this film is part of a wider theatrical strategy. Amazon MGM is planning more films for the big screen over the next few years, experimenting with genres and storytelling styles that connect with varied audiences.

For Kashyap, the film signals a return to stories rooted in human flaws, inner turmoil, and societal tensions. He credited the team and actors for giving the film its shape and momentum. The film also features a music-driven narrative, integrated into the arc of the story rather than treated as a separate element.

Nishaanchi will open exclusively in cinemas on September 19, with more details on the soundtrack and promotional material expected to follow in the coming weeks.
