Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar grabbed the headlines for his "non-political" interview with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as he has been widely trolled for not casting his vote on Monday.
Akshay who reportedly holds a Canadian passport is not eligible to vote in India. For many people online, that is a sacrilege of sorts for Bollywood's new-age Bharat Kumar, who loves treating his fans to patriotic films at least once a year.
The actor has set up Bharat Ke Veer, an online portal to help Army widows. From Baby to Gold, Akshay has fought for the country many times on the big screen. But none of this is enough to keep him from the regular criticism that comes his way on social media.
While talking about the on-going controversy, he said, “I really don’t understand the unwarranted interest and negativity about my citizenship. I have never hidden or denied that I hold a Canadian passport. It is also equally true that I have not visited Canada in the last seven years. I work in India and pay all my taxes in India.
“While all these years, I have never needed to prove my love for India to anyone, I find it disappointing that my citizenship issue is constantly dragged into needless controversy, a matter that is personal, legal, non-political, and of no consequence to others. I would like to continue contributing in my small way to the causes that I believe in and make India stronger and stronger.”
On 29th April 2019, Mumbai witnessed the 17th Lok Sabha elections, as many Bollywood celebrities were seen casting their votes. Akshay was one of the celebrities to encouraged the people to vote.
