Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan are one of Bollywood’s most beloved power couples. As they celebrate 18 years of marriage on April 20, 2025, fans are showering love on the couple. But not many know that their wedding, which took place in 2007, had its fair share of family drama. As per past reports, Abhishek’s sister Shweta Nanda Bachchan was not too happy with Aishwarya becoming her bhabhi. Instead, she had someone else in mind — a popular Bollywood actress who once shared a strong bond with the Bachchan family.
Yes, we are talking about Karisma Kapoor. Abhishek and Karisma were once the talk of the town. Their engagement in 2002 turned the deep friendship between the Kapoor and Bachchan families into a promising rishtedaari. Fans and media had already started dreaming of their grand wedding. However, things took a surprising turn when their relationship ended in 2003. After more than five years of dating, the couple parted ways, and no official reason was shared publicly.
But the twist doesn’t end there. According to reports by India Today, Shweta Bachchan was very fond of Karisma and reportedly wanted her to be a permanent part of their family. The bond between Shweta and Karisma continues to be warm and friendly, even after the breakup. In 2022, Karisma was seen attending a family brunch celebrating Shweta’s mother-in-law, Ritu Nanda’s birthday. The brunch had other Kapoor and Nanda family members like Armaan Jain, Nikhil Nanda, Anissa Malhotra, and Riddhima Kapoor Sahni. Karisma even posted moments from the day on her social media.
What makes this connection stronger is that Karisma is also related to Shweta’s husband, Nikhil Nanda. That made it quite natural for Shweta to imagine Karisma as her bhabhi. Born to Bollywood legends Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, Shweta has always kept close ties with her extended family, making this throwback all the more interesting.
After Karisma and Abhishek’s breakup, both moved on with their lives. Abhishek went on to marry Aishwarya Rai in 2007. Their wedding was a grand affair, and they became one of the most glamorous couples in B-town. They were blessed with a daughter, Aaradhya, in 2011. While reports of their separation pop up every now and then, the couple continues to appear strong together at public events.
Karisma Kapoor, on the other hand, married businessman Sanjay Kapur. However, that marriage didn’t last, and she is now a proud single mother to two children — Samiera and Kiaan. Despite everything, Karisma has maintained her dignity and stayed connected to both Kapoor and Nanda families.
Shweta Bachchan herself has carved her own identity beyond the Bachchan name. She is a respected author and columnist, having written for publications like Vogue India and Daily News and Analysis. Her novel Paradise Towers became a bestseller, and in 2018, she launched her own fashion label.
On the work front, Abhishek Bachchan recently starred in Be Happy, a heart-touching dance drama that won praise from audiences. He is also part of the upcoming comedy film Housefull 5, where he’ll reunite with Akshay Kumar and other stars. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, last seen in Ponniyin Selvan: II, is expected to walk the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival again this year. In 2024, she was seen there with daughter Aaradhya, winning hearts for their elegant presence.
Despite all ups and downs, Aishwarya has proved herself as a loving wife, devoted mother, and graceful bahu of the Bachchan family. Whether it was early disagreements or ongoing rumours, the couple has stood strong for 18 years.
As we look back on their journey, it’s clear that Abhishek and Aishwarya have built a life together based on love, respect, and resilience. And while Shweta Bachchan may have had a different wish years ago, today, the Bachchan family continues to remain one of Bollywood’s most iconic households.
