Indian, lived all my life in India.
The values, issues, problems shown in pak shows are very very relevant to India also. Even today in India there are large sections of the society where having a daughter is a curse, where a women is "allowed" to work, she doesn't choose to work.

Even today there are men like Zaroon, who want to set boundaries for their women, and these are all around us, and in the context of our social systems not necessarily bad.

For me the story of ZGH was a very real, very grounded, very simple yet immensely complex story of relationships. In my life and work I have found people like Murtaza, Zaroon, Junaid, in india too.

The thing about Pak shows are that they tell a story like it is, and focus on the relationships and their dynamics. The narrative is simple, the settings very understated and subtle, the acting excellent and a lot of attention is paid to story writing and dialogues

The only grouse I had with ZGH was that it got over too soon, before we had our fill of Zaroon and kashaf.

As for the fact that they don't show any physical intimacy or glamour, well a good story doesn't really need them, and the Indian Telly shows which are only high on these, but have become completely farcical in terms of the story and characters are no longer emotional appealing or mentally stimulating.

Usually my kids stay away from my Hindi shows, but of late my daughter has started watching zindagi at 8pm with me. because she saw a Zaroon and kashaf scene and was fascinated at the way they were discussing their problems - her comment was "ma they are actually talking to each other, like you and Papa". Even i a very comfortable with her watching these shows and she has so many questions and things to discuss at the end. Unlike the black and white characters of Hindi shows, the characters in pak shows are grey, sometimes one can't really dislike them or blame them, even kashaf had so many hang ups and that impacted her relationships. This is true to our lives.

The writer of this article, I don't know where in india she is from, because these issues are a part of Indian society also, our shows just choose to not address them and make a mockery of them instead.

I agree with the 60% of this article. I also had a issue with gender inequality while watching zindagi gulzar hai. It's man's world kind of zaroon's thinking was beyond my tolerance. And they are showing issues with clothes for e.g I saw a episode of Kitni girah baaki hai where a maid was wearing a saree and her malkin told her these words 'Ye khula dhaka zism liye ghumti hai'. Being an indian it was intolerable for me as saree is a traditional outfit here. And suddenly the first thing which came in my mind was -'Is it the reason why zaroon's mother used to wear saree'. Is there any connection of saree with their views about liberal women ?
And yeah no doubt most of the stories of kitni girah baaki hai are very depressing..all stories are not giving a social message. So it's like a bunch of sad stories.
And about Aunn Zara show..it's ending was like 'Hurry up we have to end this story today'. It was not a proper ending. Aunn's wink in the end clearly shows that he is not guilty and finally he escaped. And the last scene was not romantic at all. He was looking like a despo husband who can only thinks about one thing..calling his own baby a'Kabab mein haddi' proved that.

But i don't agree with the writer on some points like..
Glamour:- We need good stories not heavy make-up on the name of glamour.
But can we fully blame this writer ??
We are saying we want good stories not glamour but how many of us are watching Doordarshan's Shows ? Which are less of glamour. May be we can find good stories there may be not but how many of us have tried to watch it's shows ?
Aren't we hypocrites ?

I also don't agree with the writer on the point of 'Steamy Scenes.
For me if indian shows have so many flaws then pakistani shows too have flaws.
I read the description of Show 'Maat' on wikipedia and i found it similar to indian shows and the show 'Mere qatil Mere Dildaar' is no lesser than indian shows.. two marriages and talaak of male lead. Two marriages of female lead..second one for revenge with a already married guy and brother of male lead.
So if we want to see these shows of multiple marriages then what's the need of pak shows ? We have enough of these type of shows in our country.

I have similar thought as you here. I also didn't agree with the author on the same issues that your mentioned.
This whole thing about Pak shows being more realistic, is related to their scenes and make up. They don't shoot on sets, but in real locations. The make up is normal, not caked up like our characters, who look like nothing on earth. These are major things that give it a more "real: relevance. It straight in the eye, and very pleasant on it too.
Where ZGH was concerned, it was only Fawad and Sanam that worked for me. I found the story very regressive and agree with what you said above fully.
I could have still accepted it as a story, and appreciated it but the low production values (poor direction and screenplay) spoiled it for me. There are lots of stories in the world, that I don't agree with, but I don't have an issue with that. Its when there are glaring loopholes, which leave me with "whhhat????" is what gets to me.
And that's the same reason why our TV shows as well as most of our movies get to me.

When I 1st watched Humsafar, I was floored and decided that there would be no more local TV viewing for me. But as I watched more and more of their stuff, I found the universal truth. All their shows are not fantastic. There are some very good ones, and most of them loose their plot after a while, and a lot of repeated stories and plots.
Since their shows were not so popular here then, I used to read a couple of their websites where they would review their shows, and I found their reviewers often had similar opinions - that the story was losing its plot, it was being stretched unnecessarily, and they needed to end.
ZGH was among one of these too. Go read some of their reviews on current show, I bet you will not want to even attempt them.
When stories have to go on for 1000 episodes like ours, you bet there will be no sense left in it. It is expected. But when stories go wrong ad are hurried up at the end, in limited episodes, its very very annoying.
After a point, Aunn Zara was all about consummating the marriage. In a comedy, all right, but that was the whole point. Agreed, no social message, just a romcom, but different people take it in different ways. I know a few people who were embarrassed to watch the same thing being the goal, episode after episode, in front of their kids.
This lady has voiced her opinion on her blog or whatever, and I don't think it speaks for all of India.
Its her opinion and she has every right to say what she feels. If you don't agree with it, there's no problem. :) Similarly, opinions on this thread are also personal and fully justified for oneself too.

Different stokes for different folks. I'd suggest the writer not to tune into Pakistani shows and instead stick to the Indian ones. She will get her hawt scenes by the dozen.

hehe. jaise humare shows toh bahut jhande gaad rahe hain equality and modernity ke.

the regressiveness that these shows have is a fraction of what shows in ours. and humare liye toh passionate love story equals physical abuse with the hero flinging the girl around, twisting her arms etc etc.

point is that the article writer is in love with ekta maiyya's heroine mahan formula oriented shows. The writer is in love with 10inches bindi, backless blouse, transparent sarees,100 kilos of makeup, different varienties of eye lenses, bhasan wale dialogues, lahu muh lag gaya typesa consummation, husband being treated as doormat, weak men characterisation,
the writer is suffering with indigestion as she cant digest the bitter truth of society both in India as well as Pakistan. The writer is simply not understanding that ZGH depicted one part of society and KMTBNH,KGBH depicted the other part. If according to the writer pak shows are depressing so the Indian daily soaps are frustating. Truth is both Indian and pak shows have their own +ve n -ve points. So these kinds of article where writer is simply criticising pak shows without a single word of appreciation is highly ridiculous. Its high time that they should learn to have mutual admiration n understanding with shows of other countries
