Back after a small hiatus, the TV babe Shraddha Nigam talks about her new show with Rashmi Hemrajani

MUMBAI: She is not one of those bahus, nor is she amongst those who enjoys a college romance. Yet, Shraddha Nigam gets all the limelight by just playing the characters she has believed in.

Shraddha who had started her career by doing theatre and auditioned for a show on Zee and that head-started her career. Shraddha plays one of the leads in 'Pyar Ishq aur Mohabbat', her show on Zee Next. Shraddha elaborates, "Kiya is a girl whose life revolves around her sister, Sanaa, a Bollywood actress. But the twist is that Sanaa falls in love with her sister's boyfriend, Angad, played by Sachin Sharma."

Apart from being on Indian television Shraddha has captured airtime on Pakistani television as well. She has recently returned from Dubai where she was shooting for a Pakistani series titled, 'Kabhi Na Kabhi'. The story is about three sisters who are in search for their soulmate.

"I play the role of the youngest sister, who is a loveable brat she is spoiled at the same bullied by the elders." Shraddha starred alongside Tina Parekh and Himani Shivpuri and a host of Pakistani actors. The show was produced by Mushroom productions and was shot in Dubai.

So would movies be the next step? "Yes I am doing a couple of movies, but cant talk about it now," she signs off.

No to saas-bahu soaps: Shraddha

Shraddha Nigam can't stop talking about the love of her life – Karan Grover.

She reveals, "We've been seeing each other for a couple of months and I've found a very understanding friend in him. I feel surprised to see him playing a romantic character in Dill Mill Gayye . When I see him on the television, I sometimes start thinking that it is real."

Sparks flew when the two met in April this year and Shraddha unapologetically adds that it was Karan, who was in a hurry to pop the question.

Best remembered for her role in Choodiyan , Shraddha will now be seen in Pyar , Ishq Aur Mohabbat . She plays a girl who loves her best friend but the guy is fond of someone else and yet has feelings for the character Shraddha plays. What would she do if she faces such a situation in real life? "I'll get dark circles and will spend sleepless nights thinking about what to do next," she says.

The actor's main concern is not to get typecast in a slot. "I have this urge to do something new each time. I can't repeat myself. If I am not doing anything new, I feel I'm not doing anything at all," she says. But why has she maintained a safe distance from the saas-bahu soaps? "It is simple. I can't relate to the stories. These soaps may be hot but I can't be a part of them."

Ask her what is keeping her busy and she says, "I am working in two comedy films." Does that mean she's thinking Bollywood? "Not yet. TV consumes a lot of time. When I will get offers for good films, I will have to cross the bridge, but right now I am happy striking a balance between films and TV soaps."

'I love to splurge on gadgets'
11 Jan 2008, 0000 hrs IST,TNN

Having starred in over 100 commercials, a couple of music videos, Telegu flicks, and more recently as the leading lady in television soaps like Rishton ki Dor and Pyar ki Kashti Mein; Sampada Vaze seems to have added many feathers to her hat.

The picture-perfect actor who'd taken a brief sabbatical after her marriage last year seems to be back to the place where she belongs:the studios. As she juggles hectic shooting schedules, she admits that having a supportive husband who understands the demands of her profession is all that she could have asked for, "He has been very supportive of the long hours and the uncertainties of acting as a profession. I think I am very lucky to have such an understanding partner."

A corporate turned television star, Sampada might have been coaxed into modelling, but she enjoyed acting as well.

A Virgo, Sampada also confesses that she never hesitates to speak out and has a "lot of interests outside work as well."

She also points out that over a period of time, she has said 'no' to plenty of Bollywood offers. "I had been putting these offers aside as I felt it would be difficult for me to balance career and my marriage. Moreover I am happy doing television. Now, however, if something interesting comes up, I will take up the offer. I am confident now that I will manage to balance my time", she says.

Quiz Sampada about her reported car fetish and she says sheepishly, "I am not very tech-savvy, but I love to splurge on all the latest gadgets. I already own the latest i-phone that has just arrived in India."
Apart from being tech savvy, Sampada pronounces her love for books as well and admits to finding Vikram Chandra's 'Sacred Games', totally engaging. She says, "I read quite a bit. I have a small library of 500 books at home. I carry books on journeys and to the set as well."

She also admits to being choosy about work and enjoys doing comedy roles. That apart, she finds adventure reality shows to be really exciting. "I am keen on participating in an international adventure reality show like Survivor. Having to go to the jungle and surviving all alone is an arresting thought," she signs off.

When Krishna turned director!

"It's human nature that when you see others rising you tend to compare that with yourself," says Krishna.

We hear you turned director on the sets of your show Pyar Ishq Mohabbat...
Yes, that's true. My director Iqbal Rizvi was coming from a night shoot and was extremely tired and we were shooting a very important party sequence in one of the Juhu nightclubs which was available only for a day. So I just volunteered to help him in his work and he was more than happy as he knows I come from a fiction background.

Pyar Ishq Mohabbat is a comedy. Isn't this the first time you've attempted comedy?
It's a romantic comedy. I have done comedy in some shows previously but never of this kind. And moreso when you are opposite actresses like Sampada Vaze and Shradha Nigam it becomes more interesting.

What do you prefer — serious or comedy?
Both have there own charm. Both entertain their side of audiences. I love doing both. . With serious roles I have made people cry and with comedy made them laugh. You see I can make you cry and laugh at the same time!

A career in television does have its share on ups and downs... how do you cope with it?
Frankly, I do not think too much about it. I concentrate on what I am doing and not what others are. It's human nature that when you see others rising you tend to compare that with yourself. You feel you are going downwards and vice versa. I think you should only think about what you are doing and compare it with your ambitions. That way you'll always be at the top.

Has the change in name from Sachin Sharma to Krishna helped you?
My friends still call me by my old name. But otherwise it's Krishna all the way

Ending cold war!

TV soaps often highlight the problems between female characters, leaving us wondering if it is a bit too exaggerated.

Yes, it may be to create dramatic effect. But in real life too one cannot deny that when two leading ladies are in a serial troubled sparks can fly and create a tense atmosphere.

It did not take long for Krishna (who was earlier called Sachin Sharma) to realise during the shoot of the comic serial Pyaar Ishq Mohabbat that there was a cold war between his heroines Shraddha Nigam and Sampada Vaze. "I sensed they were not at ease in each other's company. There was no showdown or confrontation, but a cold war that could be sensed," affirms Krishna.

The worst affected in this anti-vibe real life drama were the unit guys. "If one actor came on the sets, the other would move away. So, trying to manage both simultaneously became tough for the unit hands," he says.

Proving that advertisements do change lives of people, Krishna got inspired by an ad which persuades people to talk and communicate to break the barrier. "I started inviting Shraddha and Sampada for lunch in my room, but not together initially. Slowly, I made sure both were having lunch together with me." Then it was just a matter of time before they opened up and began conversing with each other. And today the entire unit is thankful to the actor for the new-found affability between Shraddha and Sampada. The final outcome is, "Now they are so friendly that they even share their make-up rooms. Getting two women together is the toughest achievement," says Krishna heaving a sigh of relief!

Sampada wants to give new show her very best

Unlike Anoop Soni, Sampada Vaze has been around for quite sometime on TV. But the fact remains that after getting started with a romantic comedy called Pyar Ki Kashti Mein, the pretty starlet has not done as many memorable shows like some of her contemporaries. And she admits that she is particularly choosy about what she does. And now that she has started doing a show for Zee Next, Pyar Ishq Mohabbat, she intends to work very hard.

"The show is killing me. I have been shooting around the clock," admits Sampada. And while she is doing serials, she has little intention of joining films. "TV is not that bad. I do believe that more people watch an average TRP show like Bigg Boss. And all the biggest stars are on TV nowadays promoting their movies. They are also on TV making their money and reaching out to more people than they ever can through a single film," she says. And while she agrees that saas bahu sagas are regressive she says, "Tulsi is more famous any day than actresses like Celina Jaitley or a Tanushree Dutta!" Well, we surely have to agree with that remark. That's the true power of the small screen in India today.

Shraddha Nigam loves to gossip

The vivacious actress who is seen in Pyar Ishq Aur Mohabbat on Zee Next is busy hosting a show on Filmy called Filmy Cocktails. It's a weekly show. Her stint in Pyar Ishq… is now over.

"Well yes my role in Zee next show is over. Now they are showing a repeat telecast of the show. Currently I'm just hosting the Bollywood gossip show on Filmy," says Shraddha.

Why hosting? "Firstly its fun and I'm enjoying as host of a gossip show based on Bollywood actors and their personalities. Secondly, it's less time consuming and gives me enough space to do my other work simultaneously," she states.

What else is there in the pipeline? "Offers are pouring in but I'm just waiting for the right role to come my way. Recently I did an episodic on Zee's Hadsaa," she chirps.

Is there any specific role that you are looking out for? "If I decide to be so choosy then after sometime I'll be writing a script for myself. I don't mind taking up any roles, the only criteria is that the character should be attractive," she concludes.

Till then Shraddha will keep gossiping.
