My dear Vinita,

I am so glad you liked this one, and that I have managed to resolve a major puzzle for you re: Jalal's attitude towards Jodha. Yes, I too remember that scene in Amer during Sukanya's marriage. Jalal tells her why that Ratanpur fort is so important for him as it is linked to memories of his father. Jodha looks so blank and unfeeling that I wanted to clout her!

I read your take on the Akbar in Maharana Pratap, which I quit along with Faisal Khan - the distortions there are frightful - and his relationship with Jodha, with great interest. I shall look up a few episodes; it should be fun.

Please hit the Like button, Vinita. I need to keep track of all my regular readers. Thanks.

wonderful insight in the characters as always shyamalji. u have managed to answer a few questions i had while watching the serial. like why if jalal hated her so much that he wanted to defeat her did he not touch her even when he was instigated by ruqqaiya the night he was drunk. also jalal didnt have to pretend in front of her parents when they came for a visit and jodha requested him. at first i felt he did that coz he didnt want his in laws to find out what is happening in his personal life but now i realize it was mainly coz that was the first time jodha had asked him for something. the battle between his heart n his mind started right from the first time he had seen her.

i still remember the dialogue of his during the sukanyas marriage n the fort episode when jodha asks him he is the mighty ruler of hindustan then why does he give a damn as to what she thinks of him n he later mentions that he doesnt know y but he does care.

btw i just few days back was browsing thru the tv and caught a scene from the serial 'maharana pratap' which i cant stand coz it is even worse when it comes to dramatization n taking creative liberties then jodha akbar, but they showed a scene wherein akbar although shown ruthless n barbaric n following a cunning and manipulative salima begums advise always is shown as very loving and caring to Heer / jodha and she is also shown as someone who is caring, soft, loyal and loving person.

Hi Shyamala. thanks once again for your superb analysis.
Episode 10 was one of those absolutely delightful episodes and was a bit of a turning point for me where my addiction towards this serial and Rajat's Jalal in particular started taking place.
This episode was full of Khauf e Jalal moments and he actually instilled fear in me for the Mayhem he was about to unleash in Amer.
The scene with the portly halwai was corny but very endearing and brought some lighthearted humor to an otherwise intense episode.

I apologize for back tracking a bit to a previous episode analysis that I have not has a chance to comment on yet. I absolutely loved your description of the first Jalal and Hamida moment . You are correct in pointing out that Hamida's ( her real name fails me) poor acting skills did not detract from this brilliant scene that Rajat carried on his shoulders. It was a very emotional moment for me where I felt the angst and pain of both mother and son very acutely.

As we have the advantage of hindsight and know what is to come in the future for Jalal, I could not help but flash forward to Salim's childhood and watch history repeat itself. Despite knowing how acute a sense of abandonment Jalal felt about being separated from his mother at the tender age of 9, he did the same thing to his son when he snatched Salim away from the arms of his maasa and the security of his abba huzoor's protection and promptly banished him. Just like in Jalal's case where Maham filled the void with her manipulations, in Salim's case it allowed Rukaiyya to step in and do the same😭. The circumstances were different the end result the same.

Thanks once again Shyamala. cant wait for the episodes to unfold though your brilliant writings

Another fantastic analysis.i read each and every word like a favorite storybook and enjoyed it all.
My points on your take-

Risk Taking- As time passed the risks that Jalal took increased too. That seems illogical because of the precarious position he was in, of saving Abdul, he needed to be less conspicuous.

So if we view the episode through the prism of logic and intelligent analysis(first 100 episodes had that), then my answer is this- Jalal wanted to soak as much of the Jodha experience as possible. In the back of his mind, he must have known, this could be the last opportunity to see her. We know better, but he would not have. He knew that he could not take her by force, the problem of ferrying a struggling wildcat aside, she would have killed herself.

Rajat being the superb actor that he is understood this, maybe the Director too, that is why there are obvious clues. What was the need of that statement "Mahaul hi Shanka..." If not to get the opportunity to gaze into Jodha's eyes again and store that image in memory.

Then again, why did he leave that message on the floor of the prison. It put him in terrible danger. Once again for Jodha, she must know who he is, even if she hates him.

The Maham-Bairam Khan Scene- For me it was one of the highlights of the last few episodes. Two superb actors, approach each other like gunslingers, each flinging verbal barbs at the other. At the end of the stalemate, they disentangle, but look at the way Maham's eyes dance as she leaves. Truly spectacular. And then their parting adabs, both full of visible hate for each other but maintaining proprieties. What a wonderful scene!

yes aunty, it was abdul who had written it, it was said in the next episode. & srry for the using these words aunty but this suryabhan is as constipated as salimsa. even in one or two occasions i found salimsa good in his expressions but i hardly remember one occasion where i can say suryabhan was good. 😆

jalal's concern for his people was always there. despite the khaaf-e-jalal attitude he had tht heart for people like abdul & zaheer. i had actually expected to see this angle would be used later in jalal-jodha relationship but alas these things just went with the wind.

I was reading some comments on Jodha's religion.

By Jodha we mean the historical Hira Kunwari not Jodha Bai- Jehangir wife.
From what i read in history, Hira Kunwari converted to Islam(whether for marriage or later is not clear) but she remained a Krishna devotee all life.
The mughals were like modern indians who marry other religions, to marry the guy usually girl changes to guys religion but after marriage husband-wife celebrate both religion festivals and both religions exist in their life and their children are brought up in both faiths. The conversion of girl is necessary to marry and usually girls convert to boys religion(99% girls convert 1% boys convert in 21st century in 16th century 100% only girls converted). This is also necessary to decide the faith of child who is born of such union and to gain legitimacy for children of such wedlocks. India is a patriarchal country so child usually gets fathers religion and belongs to fathers family.
So Hira Kunwari or Mariam uz zamai converted to islam and followed both religions. Officially she was a muslim but privately she was muslim and hindu both(i.e. in 4 walls of agra fort). She was buried as per islam customs and Jehangir built a vav or well in her tomb to symbolize her hindu religion as per her wish.
Just for information
Man Bai Jehangir first wife also buried not cremated as she also converted to Islam
Jodha Bai Jehangir third wife too buried(in agra-- her tomb was sold by british and demolished)
So all mughal wives converted for marriage(or after marriage) but followed both islam and hindu religion in house.
Mughals were liberals(except a shah jahan or aurangzeb) and they celebrated rakhi, diwali, dusserha, christmas apart from muslim festivals in agra and delhi forts.
Akbar visited Guru Nanak and was interested in jain philosophy
Jehangir visited church in Delhi for christmas celebrations and even partook in their mass(a bell he gited still there in church)
Even the orthodox Shah Jahan(brought up in muslim way by Ruqaiah begum) celebrated rakhi, diwali, holi and dusserha with pomp at delhi and agra forts

prem, there was this discussion in the main forum as well that she did convert to islam as per the law that existed in those days, and yes she did continue her hindu practices within the four walls of the fort! ans also a minor correction akbar met guru amar dasji the third guru and not guru nanak😊

My dearest Mandy,

What a lovely set of comments! Thank you so much, for as I have noted above, it was somehow difficult for me to do this post, with its gossamer thin, magical material, and it is reassuring for me that you feel I have managed to put it across.

Thank you for that wonderful sher, a charming addition to my collection. But then you have such a treasure house of quotable quotes from the Urdu, rivalling only Adiana's!!

And just as much for adding Munni's gorgeous photos, so that the readers can check what I meant by calling the shot (as Jalal is looking up at the palki), priceless, and where he looks stern and almost angry as he stands between Suryabhan and Jodha alighting from her palki.

It is a wonderful thing, to have these photos to illustrate my text. Can you explain to me how one pastes them in there? Then the next time I am describing an expression of Jalal's and if Munni has kindly provided the correct photo/s, I could make my text an illustrated one!

Yes, that Krack cream crack was a wicked one, was it not!😉 Just ignore it!

Shyamala

shyamala i just copy paste the pics just like copy pasting a text!
