I took a peak at Beyhadh on Youtube a couple of days ago (Thank you Sony TV for uploading full episodes on your official channel 👏), and I found the character Maya to be so amazing. She is an amazing example of a strong female lead. She has it all. positive and negative shades (unbalanced depending on the situation she is placed in, but well justified through her back story)... Her chemistry with her mother is enticing. I love how she is strong in her professional setting, and so well put together, while depicting her fragile state through her interactions with her mother and father (what a horrible, horrible man he is). I believe she is slowly opening up, and showing that fragility to the male lead too.
The actress who plays Maya is beyond fabulous- a versatile actor, not afraid to play a role with so many shades and complexities. She is the shining star of the show... the other characters are okay (nice to have a laugh here and there, especially with such a strong and sensitive story line), but with the presence of a character like Maya, can easily be overlooked😉. Maya and her mother truly are the stars of the show... I hope shows like YVR learn from it and provide viewers with better female characters... The writing, acting and overall portrayal of these women are just too good. The woman portraying Maya is just pure magic, she is a true embodiment of art 👏
One of my most significant critiques of YVR and their female characters is that they are boxed into the "vamp" or "superwoman" category (both very problematic in their own ways)... leaving very little room for an in-between, resulting in the actors being restricted from enacting complex emotions... Something Rinku and Sonal have in places of the series tried to overcome:
- Rinku: the love she had for her children and husband being the motivating factor for her to avenge Survi and Srikant early in the drama was utilized well by the actress... she tried to do the same throughout, but the writing took away from her acting since it lost sight of the love she said she had for her children as they starting criticizing her[making her portrayal more laughable than laudable 😭].
- Sonal: Survi's scenes with Kartik has always been the best (no questions there), the love she has for him always made her confused... with Ankush's performance of confused, insecure, smart, emotional yet strong Kartik really worked well for the two to play off each other making their pairing so much more appealing and lovable- that you just couldn't help but route for the two, no matter how unbelievable the problems they found themselves in [meher, taayi's murderous evil plans...]... Even her scenes with Kushi diidn't work as much, due to the writers portraying her as the perfect mother/superwoman...
These categories of evil and good characters need to be challenged to make characters more appealing... I truly believe Taayi's character could have been better if she had been shown as having some honest/real motherly affection towards kartik for all of what he had done for her and her family... An actor like Rinku, I am sure will have been able to balance that so well, while still having anger toward Survi and wanting to avenge her, while not wanting to hurt Kartik in the process... that would have been an interesting watch. 😊
If any of you have not watched Beyhadh yet, do check it out... all episodes are on youtube... Maya's character and the way in which the actor enacts the role truly is something one should experience, even if it is just a scene or two. 👏
