Post the leap I thought the story had taken somewhat an unexpected turn. Seemingly, it had somewhat forgotten the drama surrounding Badnam Gali. The situations didn't revolve around the concept of what it means to hail from a brothel.
I had somewhat expected Puchki to remain in the brothel, but be that one girl who cannot be tamed and didn't give into prostitution. The promos of the show at the start had given this idea. Where Puchki runs to see Shan and says something like "you have come to take me? I feel it would have been a more interesting story telling this way. But, none of this happened.
Instead, Puchki is out of the brothel and has progressed into a career and is a lady with bravery and courage. Regardless my expectation, this was a nice development. I cannot deny this. Shan was away and the whole story somewhat had turned about the Majumdars. If we see it from Shan's mother's perspective, the story has become about her hiding what she has done with Arindam. The stigma's associated with Badnam Gali has disappeared entirely. This seemed like the show had gone elsewhere with the meaning of Yeh Teri Galiyan...
Until I saw the promo for 2 hours special episode upcoming today. It refers to a storyline ahead, where the situation has turned into a matter of Puchki's background. Where she is from and what is her social worth.
This is obviously coming back to the plot. Something I am pleased to see. Somehow it seems like prostitution is morally degrading. But, in one way it is a type of employment. It brings people money. Without this many people would probably starve to death, resort to stealing and so on. There is a positive aspect to it. Also, just because one is into prostitution does not mean he or she cannot be a good human being. Cannot be a good person, a good friend, a good wife or a husband. It is never clear how from escorting or sleeping with several people for money automatically means one cannot be good in other social roles.
On the other hand, Puchki is Asmita now. She has rechristened herself and renamed herself. Asmita is only Puchki when she takes herself to be and thinks of herself as Shan's bondhu. Just like Shan is no longer a boy from Badnam Gali because he has not lived for many years and has lived with the Majumdar's, Asmita cannot be associated with Badnam Gali because she has not been living there either. Perhaps, Asmita can argue this. Then again, I feel like Asmita will keep her job role a secret because she needs to bring the truth out about Arindam and what his wife has been up to for many years.
How will Asmita who is thrown out because of her past identity as Puchki face her circumstances? It is unlikely the makers will show her as weak and helpless. Puchki was always brave and Asmita has been too. She cannot let this go down easy. Do you think she will make references to Shan's background too and showcase the discrimination occurring between sexes. A woman from a brothel is far worse than a man from a brothel? Could the creatives rely on Arindam's act of going to one and pregnating a prostitute? Could it echo what Badi Maa had one said, people come here and do the dirty, but we have to bear the shame. I think I'm back on the ball now because with shows there's always opportunity to utilise a scene or two and pass on a social message. Prostitutes are not void of their due respect as a person - a human being - because of their job. Second, perhaps the creatives can highlight the problems a lot of women face related to this area. A lot of women are there by not choice. They were either sold of or left alone by others and how once they are in it, it is very hard to leave. So, there's lots of ways to take this plot related to prostitution.
Hopefully, this show will exceed my expectations. I am back on the game now with the show coming back to Badnam Gali.
Kind Regards,
Ibby
