Chapter Three
“Akshu!” Mishti cried out, waking from a nightmare.
“Mishti, it's okay,” Abir assured her, pulling her into a hug. “It's okay,” he repeated, kissing her head. Mishti was crying, clinging tightly to him. He could feel the sweat from her head on his neck as her tears stained his tee.
“Sir! Everything okay?” Abhira asked, rushing into the room, panicked. Abir was confused to see her for a second before he remembered how Armaan and Abhira had talked them into spending the night at the outhouse. By the time they'd been done with dinner and the million things they seemed to want to say to each other, it had gotten too late to go back to the hotel. Armaan had also said something about how he'd feel better if he knew there was someone staying with Abhira, and so, Mishti had agreed. Abir was only too happy to follow suit.
“Nightmare,” he mouthed to Abhira who was looking at Mishti, extremely worried.
“Abir… Mujhe bohot bechaini ho rahi hai. Bilkul uss tarah jaise ek saal pehle hui thi. Akshu ko humaari zaroorat hai,” Mishti explained. “Humein uske paas hona chahiye, Abir. She needs us.”
“I know, Mishti. I know,” Abir answered. “I promise, main humaari Akshu ko dhoondke waapas launga. Phir tum usse khoob daant lagaaana. Aur hum usse kabhi apne se alag nahi hone denge, okay?”
“Lekin humein uske paas abhi hona hai, Abir. Baad mein nahi,” Mishti sobbed. “Itne saal ho gaye. Pata nahi meri bachchi kis haal mein hai. Kaise guzaare usne itne saal akele. Main… Main Taima, Naira Di, aur BF ko kya munh dikhaungi, Abir? Main Badi Maa aur Bade Papa ko kaise face karungi? Unhone mere liye sab kuch kiya… Aur main Akshu ke liye kuch nahi kar paayi.”
“Hey, hey, hey,” Abir pushed her back so that he could look her in the eye. “It's okay. Maine kaha na. Akshu ghar waapas aayegi, Mishti. Phir sab theek ho jaayega.”
“Abir… Mujhe Akshu wala gaana sunaoge? Please. Mujhe uski bohot yaad aa rahi hai,” Mishti mumbled.
“Of course,” Abir whispered. Taking a deep breath, he sang the song that Akshu used to love.
“O Kanha, ab toh murli ki,
Madhur sunaa do taan…
O Kanha, ab toh murli ki,
Madhur sunaa do taan…”
He had a beautiful voice but Abhira didn't register anything after that first couplet. That was her mother's song. How did Abir know it? Were they talking about her mother when they said Akshu? Akshara… Akshu. Were they her family? Was that why she'd felt such a deep connection to them the moment they'd met? Abhira didn't dare hope. She couldn't. Her mother had been her only family.
“Abir, tumhaare partner se kaho na ki humein jaldi apni Akshu se milwa de. Woh meri baat toh nahi sunn rahe, lekin shayad tumhaari sunn jaaye,” Mishti murmured once she'd calmed down a little.
“Main roz unse yehi toh maangta hoon, Mishti. Bas Akshu ghar aa jaaye. Mujhe aur kuch nahi chahiye. Pata nahi kis haal mein hogi woh. Abhinav se vaada kiya tha maine ki Akshu ka poora khayal rakhunga main,” Abir replied. “Aur tumhe pata haina, main vaada nibhane se kabhi peeche nahi hat'ta. Yeh wala bhi nibhaunga.”
“Abir Sir,” Abhira whispered, scared beyond belief, hoping beyond hope. The coincidences were just too many. They had to mean something more.
“Oh, Abhira!” Abir exclaimed softly. “I'm sorry, main bhool hi gaya tha ki tum yahaan ho. Tumhe disturb karne ke liye I'm so sorry.”
“Aap sorry kyun keh rahe hain? Aap please sorry mat kahiye,” Abhira replied. “But… Main aapse ek baat poochna chaahti hoon.”
“Haan… Poocho na,” Abir encouraged. “Tum kuch bhi pooch sakti ho. Hichkichao mat.” He didn't know why but he felt compelled to tell her that she could always come to him.
“Aap… Aap dono abhi… Kis— kiske baare mein baat kar rahe the?” She managed to ask, somehow stringing the words together, her heart in her throat.
“Woh… Akshara,” Abir smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. It was more of a defeated smile. “She's my niece. Waise… Woh toh kehne ki baat hai. Mere liye woh meri beti se kam nahi hai. Lekin, pichle kuch saalon mein circumstances aise ho gaye… Hum nahi jaante woh kahaan hai. Itne saal ho gaye usse dhoondte, lekin uska kuch pata nahi chal paa raha. Bas, usse hi yaad kar rahe the hum.”
“Ak— Akshara Sharma?” Abhira pressed.
“Haan,” Abir nodded, confused. Abhira exhaled sharply at that. She fell to the bed, shocked. Could it really be her mother they were talking about? Wanting to be a 100% sure before she said or did anything else, she reached for the locket that she always kept around her neck and opened it, revealing a picture of her beloved mother. “Inki baat kar rahe hain aap?” She asked, showing the picture to the couple.
“Yes!” Mishti exclaimed. “Tum— tum jaanti ho usse? Kahaan hai woh? Kaisi hai? Mujhe uske paas le chalogi, Abhira? Please! Itne saal ho gaye maine apni bachchi ko dekha nahi, uske gale nahi lagi, uski hasi nahi suni. Itne saalon mein maine har pal bas usse yaad kiya hai. Please, please, please mujhe uske paas le chalo. Maine toh uske bachche ki ek jhalak tak nahi dekhi. Ab toh woh badi bhi ho gayi hogi. Ya hoga? Mujhe toh yeh bhi nahi pata ki mera naati hai ya naatin. Shayad main hi kabhi Akshu ke liye achchi maa nahi bann paayi… Isliye woh mujhse door chali gayi. Lekin tum… Tum please usse kaho ki mera saara waqt uska hai. Iss baar main koi kami nahi rehne doongi. Main sabse achchi maa banungi apni Akshu ke liye aur uske bachche ke liye. Bas… Woh ek baar mujhe maaf karde aur ghar laut aaye. Mujhe aur kuch nahi chahiye.”
Abhira couldn't help herself then. She'd been holding herself back with so much difficulty, but knowing that these two wonderful people in front of her were her family, had been looking for her mother, for her. She'd spent a whole year thinking she was an orphan. But she wasn't. She had a family.
“Abhira,” Abir called out, apologetic. “Hum tumhe pareshaan nahi karna chaahte the. We're very sorry. But, please… Mujhe batao… Tum aise Akshu ki photo ke saath? Tum usse jaanti ho na? Kya… Kya tum? Tum… Tum meri Akshu ki beti ho? Abhinav aur Akshara ki Abhira? Haina?”
Fully sobbing now, Abhira nodded, unable to say a single thing. She always had so much to say, but today, in the face of this important moment, she was speechless. She didn't have anything to say, she didn't know what to feel. “Abhira! Meri Abhira!” Abir cried, tears welling up in his eyes as well. He surged forward, pulling her roughly into his chest. Abhira clung to him, wrapping her arms tightly around his abdomen.
Not even a second later, she felt another pair of arms enclose around her and turned her face to see Mishti hugging both of them. “Meri jaan!” She exclaimed, peppering her with a thousand kisses. “Tum… Tum aa gayi. Mere paas aa gayi. Maine tumhe har din kitna miss kiya, Abhira. I'm sorry… I'm so, so, so sorry, ki jab tumhe meri zaroorat thi, main tumhaare saath nahi thi. Please, ho sake toh mujhe maaf kardo? Kya tum… Kya tum humein ek mauka de sakti ho? Please… Tum aur Akshu… Tum humaari family ho. Please, please… Ghar aa jao, humaare paas. Akshu hum sabse naraaz hai main jaanti hoon. Uska haq hai. Lekin, I promise… Woh agar mujhe ek mauka aur degi toh main usse kabhi shikayat ki wajah nahi dungi.”
“Mumma… Mumma ab… She's… Woh… Mumma ab… Iss— iss… Wo— woh iss duniya mein… Na— nahi rahi,” Abhira sobbed out.
“Akshu… Kya? Kya hua meri Akshu ko? Woh kaise…” Mishti trailed off, crying loudly. She turned to Abir, seeking the solace of his arms. Abir hugged both of them tightly, holding them close as his own tears fell, completely unbidden.
Through her tears, Abhira slowly managed to explain how she was being harassed, how Armaan had gotten involved, and how Akshara had lost her life while trying to protect Armaan. And once she'd started talking, she was unable to stop. She told them the circumstances under which she married Armaan, the ill-treatment she'd received at the hands of his family, their divorce, his almost-wedding, and how they'd finally managed to put their differences aside. She talked till her tongue went dry and her throat started itching. She told them about every time her heart was broken, about every tear she cried, about every time she felt inferior and useless. She told them about how she missed her mother and how the Poddars hadn't hesitated to even badmouth her. She laid bare all her pain and suffering in front of them, surprised that she was allowing herself to be so vulnerable in front of two people who, despite being her supposed family, were practically strangers.
Maybe, it was because of the way Abir's arms around her gave her strength to speak out loud, or maybe it was because of the way Mishti's embrace felt as safe as her own mother's. Maybe it was simply because finally there was someone who was willing to listen to her and wasn't discounting her pain. She really didn't know what prompted her to be so honest, but once she was done, she was greeted with the support she'd craved for so long.
“I'm so proud of you,” Mishti murmured, pulling her close. “Itna sab kuch aise haske face karna asaan nahi hai. You're so strong, Abhira. I'm very proud. But… I'm sorry. Ki tumhe itni choti umar mein itna sab sehna pada. Yeh sab humaari galti hai. Agar hum tumhaare saath hote, toh tumhe yeh sab kabhi nahi jhelna padta. I'm so, so, so sorry, meri jaan.”
“Toh aap kyun nahi the?” Abhira despaired, once again surprised at how she felt like she could question them on their absence, could hold them accountable, could be angry with them for not being there when they should have.
“Believe me, Abhira, yeh humaari choice nahi thi,” Abir explained. “Akshu was the apple of our eyes. We loved her just as much as we loved our own kids. Jab usne humein bataya she was expecting you, we were the happiest. Tum soch bhi nahi sakti hum kitne excited the. Abhinav ke jaane ke baad, tum woh pehli khushi thi, jisne humaare ghar pe dastak di thi. Lekin, shayad yeh khushi humaari kismat mein thi hi nahi.
Unn dino, mere bhai ki wife ki death ho gayi thi, cancer ki wajah se. Hum sab shock mein the. Main aur Mishti ghar mein sabko sambhaalne ki koshish kar rahe the aur iss sab mein humein pata hi nahi chala ki kab Akshu ko ghar se nikaal diya gaya. Jab humein pata chala, humne usse kahaan-kahaan nahi dhoonda… Aur aaj tak bas dhoond hi rahe the.”
Taking a deep breath, Abir got up from the bed and sat on his knees in front of Abhira. “Mujhe pata hai ki jo kuch bhi hua uske liye koi excuse kaafi nahi hai, lekin please, Abhira… Yakeen maano. Main aur Mishti kabhi nahi chaahte the ki Akshu humse door ho. Jaan thi woh humaari, humaare ghar mein sabki. Woh situation aisi ho gayi ki uske saath itna bura hua aur humein khabar hi nahi mili. Jab tak Udaipur se baat Rajkot tak humaare paas pohonchi, bohot der ho chuki thi. Agar mere bas mein hota toh main kabhi Akshu ko iss tarah akela nahi padne deta. Woh kehti nahi thi, lekin jitna sammaan usne apne Papa ko diya, Karthik Jeeju ko diya, utna usne mujhe bhi diya. Mishti ko woh hamesha Maasi Maa bulaati thi. Main aur Mishti uske parents nahi hain, lekin humne hamesha koshish ki usse Naira Di aur Karthik Jeeju ki kami kam mehsoos ho. Lekin, hum achche parents nahi bann paaye. Humaari laparwaahi ki wajah se usne bohot dukh dekha. Tumne bhi. Uske liye I'm so, so, so sorry. But, please… Thoda bharosa karke sirf ek mauka dedo. Iss baar koi chook nahi hogi. Main aur Mishti tumhaara poora khayal rakhenge. Please, ghar waapas aa jao, Abhira,” he pleaded, folding his hands in front of her.
“Bade Papa, yeh aap kya kar rahe hain!” Abhira exclaimed, immediately getting down on the floor with him and holding his hands. “Aap please iss tarah haath mat jodiye. Jo hua usme aapki koi galti nahi thi. Aap yeh sab karke mujhe sharminda kar rahe hain. Aapka haath sirf aashirwaad dene uthna chaahiye, maafi maangne nahi. Aap aajke baad please kabhi aisa mat kariyega, Bade Papa. Please.”
“Ky— kya kaha tumne?” Abir fumbled, stars in his eyes.
“Aap please aise haath mat jodiye,” Abhira repeated.
“Woh nahi… Tumne mujhe kya kehke bulaya?” Abir asked her.
“Oh,” Abhira breathed, a little conscious as she realized what she'd addressed him as. “Bade Papa,” she whispered. “Pata nahi kaise mere munh se nikal gaya. Agar aapko bura laga toh main kabhi phirse aapko iss naam se nahi bulaungi.”
“No!” Abir cried, startling Abhira. Softer, he added, “Aisa nahi hai. Tum abse mujhe sirf Bade Papa hi bulaana. Aur kuch nahi.”
“Okay, Bade Papa,” Abhira smiled, making Abir grin in return.
“Abhira… Tum humaare saath rahogi na?” Mishti asked. “Please?”
Turning to Mishti, Abhira said, “Itne pyaare mere Badi Maa aur Bade Papa ko mujhe mana karne mein bilkul achcha nahi lag raha, lekin Badi Maa… Armaan ko meri zaroorat hai. Main usse chodke kahin nahin jaa sakti.”
“Kya hua? Sab theek haina? Mujhe bata… Main sab sahi kar dungi,” Mishti urged. Sighing, Abhira launched into another tale, briefing Abir and Mishti about the current situation and also how Armaan felt like he owed everything to the Poddars for taking him in. Mishti was struck with the similarities in Armaan's situation with hers and her heart went out to the boy. She understood why Abhira felt compelled to stay by his side. Back when she had been struggling with the same thing, she had needed Abir more than anyone else. He'd been strength, her rock, her biggest support. And she could see that Abhira wanted to be the same for Armaan. She was glad that Armaan had someone in his corner, even if it meant that Abhira would be staying in Udaipur.
“Okay, okay. Bohot ho gayi yeh sad baatein. Angry Chorni, humein apni Abhira mili hai itne saalon baad. Iss baat pe celebration toh banta haina?” Abir interjected.
“You're right, Ajeeb Rajvansh!” Mishti agreed. “Celebration toh banta hai!”
“Okay, so… Iss baat pe mere special wale noodles ho jaaye?” Abir asked.
“Noodles? Yeh toh mere bhi favourite hain!” Abhira exclaimed. “Mumma hamesha mere liye banati thi!”
“Tujhe kya lagta hai? Teri mumma ko kisne sikhaya?” Abir questioned, pointing to himself.
“Sach, Bade Papa?” Abhira squealed, excited. “Aap mere liye bhi please banao na!”
“Anything for my lil princess!” Abir laughed. He stood up from the floor and placed a lingering kiss on Abhira's head, promising to himself that he would never let her be alone in the world ever again.
