It was given though. Like if one has watched enough ITV, it was a given Abhinav was gonna die. The question wasn't if, it was always 'when'.

Infact, I just remembered saying that twice last month that Abhinav is dying and Abhira reunion will happen 😆

all because of one factor : Harshad. As long as he was in the picture, the reunion was always happening and for that Abhinav had to die.

Abhinav's character was written to show Akshara what unconditional love,healthy marriage,supportive partner looks like and that's what she would seek in her future relationships and to show Abhimanyu what kinda father he should be to Abhir and what kinda future husband he should be to Akshara. That was the essence/purpose behind his existence.

The only point I faltered in was thinking he would die after Akshara wins custody. That they would get to be a happy family in Kasauli again before he exits.
